PhreeZone 20 #3 January 8, 2003 What ever the smallest size for the quality is. Personally I like seeing 384k WMV or 512 Quicktime movies even though they might be a little on the large side. Mpeg1 and mpeg2 are just too large imho. DivX generated AVI's are nice too. PLEASE stay away from the real media stuff. If you want to please the Windows people (or most the Linix) it would be a Windows media, to please Mac users its Quicktime.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
mountainman 0 #4 January 8, 2003 QuotePersonally I like seeing 384k WMV ...snip... PLEASE stay away from the real media stuff. I personally use the 367k standard. (Pretty close to yours Phree.) I find that it is a pretty good balance of quality vs. file size. I usually get a little more than 2mb/min. for them. Not too shabby. And yes, PLEASE don't do Real Media. I refuse to have that on my computer. It's the devil. LOLhttp://www.brandonandlaura.com
indyz 1 #5 January 8, 2003 I'll throw in the Linux user's perspective: DivX first, then WMV, then QuickTime. They are all playable under linux with mplayer but QT requires some tricks, and is in alpha condition right now. DivX works perfectly and WMV works pretty well. Mpegs also work, but they are just gigantic.
mattb 0 #6 January 8, 2003 I would vote in the following order - Windows Media AVI (non-DIVX) MPEG Quicktime Not - Real Media I don't insteall Real Media because it has too many features I don't like and Quicktime I find annoying with reminders to purchase the full version. Related question - how does one view DIVX files on a Windows Machine? Windows Media always seems to try and then fail to download the correct CODEC. (I have no clue as to the true meaning of what I just typed) Matt

Casch 0 #8 January 10, 2003 You can also go to http://www.divx.com/divx/ on occasion and download the most current DIVX codec. But I personally HATE DIVX. I know it's a great compressor codec but the loss of quality isn't worth it IMO. I would rather wait an hour for something to download, go grab a bite to eat to pass the time, and return to a BEAUTIFUL skydiving video instead of the pixelated crap that DIVX spits out. But for those that treasure their download time, I guess DIVX is for you.

My favourites are "Base Forever" and "Castles in the Sky". Watching them at their normal resolutions on a computer screen is a treat!-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
freeflyerno 0 #10 January 12, 2003 QuoteWhich format/settings are preferred for the ftp skydiving movies site? I'd say wmv for the quality vs size. 7.3MB for a 3 min video at 355 kbit/sec (see voss.wmv in the misc section) ain't too bad, and I can live with the quality. YMMV--- Unanswered questions are far less dangerous than unquestioned answers
