Online? whos the best??

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

who would you all recommend for buying stuff online. I'm in the UK and am aware i'll get stitched up on price for stuff, so buying in another country on line seems the way to go.

I'm just starting out, so its not rig buying yet (i wish it was, stupid lack of money), but the basics..

I'm thinking the Altimaster Galaxy seems like a good altimeter.. any thoughts?? wheres the cheapest place to buy them?

What are good gloves? and again where from...?

Goggles, same deal..

What do the rules say about helmets? i'll wear one anyway, just wondered what the regs were about it.

Is a jump suit essential? again, funds, very low, so this is the last thing on my list...

Anything else i've forgotton???

Cheers all!

Well, Pound Sterling is reasonable strong against the Aussie $, so you might want to check out what you can buy on-line here. A decent suit will help you to fly (e.g. having boosters) and achieve the right fall rate, so I would not wait too long to get your own. In the long run you probably want both a RW and Freefly suit but you should start with a RW suit as this is what you have to learn first. A good company down here that produces good suits is RMW. Both DZ's I've worked with include the price to rent a helmet, jumpsuit, altimeter & gloves with the price of your training and rig rental. If you're coming over here on a tight budget, you might better spend your bucks on food and lodging, and use the DZ's gear to start.

(plus, trying their gear can help you decide what to buy, should you stay with the sport)

Cheers. I'm doing an AFF plus hopefully lots more jumps in a couple of weeks. I know all the gear will be there to use, but when i get back to the dreary UK, i need the other gear to jum pat my local DZ, they only rent out rigs :(

I'll be buying the stuff either out there (if the prices at the gear shop are ok) or when i get back, on line or something.

Anyone know what the prices at the gear shop in sebastian are like??

Post aff jumpsuit - Coveralls from goodwill or the like $20 till you can get the money for a real suit, or look for used
Helmet - ProTec is $35 or so at a skate shop
Alti - Look for used here, probally under $125
Goggles - Get those at the local DZ gear shop or in FL $10-15
Gloves - Football reciever gloves - 25 in a sporting goods store

That should set you up for 20 jumps or so.

If you plan to buy online from a US dealer, remember that when the items arrive in the UK you'll likely be stuck paying import duties and/or VAT or other taxes. These can add a lot to the price of whatever you're getting. Shipping from the US is also quite expensive. It may be actually be cheaper for you to pay the normal retail price at a gear store in Florida and then carry the stuff home with you.

Something else to think about before buying - if you buy from a UK company you'll be helping support skydivers in your country. To me that would be worth paying a bit more.

"remember that when the items arrive in the UK you'll likely be stuck paying import duties and/or VAT or other taxes."
Listen to Lisa, I got stung badly ordering some vids from a reputable dealer in California, no fault of their's I might add.
UK customs are clamping down on stuff right now (go figure, we about to be at war), so they will look at the invoice, charge you VAT, plus a straight 16 quid per package fee.

This basically doubled the cost of the vids I received.>:( Nothing you can do about it either.

"if you buy from a UK company you'll be helping support skydivers in your country."

The 'Kit Store' at Headcorn, your local DZ is run by Rob Colpus of big, big, big way fame, ably assisted by international super judge and cute Scottish Hottie, Donna Crumm.
They may not be the cheapest around, but they are very cool people.

You won't need a jump suit or anything else in Florida, they will provide you all the stuff you need, best wait till you get back, then get Rob or Donna to measure you up, they also run Symbiosis, the UK's leading suit makers. I can't say enough good things about heir suits, I use them extensively.

All the other bits and bobs you should be able to procure on-site at Sebastian, or any other of the big Florida DZs.

One other thing you may consider would be to order the stuff from say SQ1, and have it delivered to Sebastian, this may take a little organising , and they may be reluctant to do this for you as they will be losing your trade. Either way phone them to arrage it.

Its a shame Crimewave isn't running Seb any more, he would have been quite sympathetic.
