PhreeZone 20 #1 December 13, 2002 Whats every ones favorite type of ring sight? I'm needing to get one finally. I've out grown the paper mark on the goggles and a right sight is needed to get to the next level on my RW videos.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Deuce 1 #2 December 13, 2002 Phree, I've got the Finley cross. It actually works pretty good for showing me what quadrant to move my subject to as it gets closer. When I'm hanging off the door of the Kingair and the customer moves into place, I put their face in the upper left quadrant and this gives a good centered result for both stills and video. At 5 feet and beyond everything is center of sight. Quade discusses the issues of parallel camera sighting on his websight. Anyhow since I have to move my head down and left as I close up, the quadrant thing works for me. For straight RW, I think the concentric would be better. Once you exit, you want to stay about the same distance above and that concentric is much more precise than the cross sight. The articulated sight is something I recommend too. I think that even if your framing is good now, it will get even better with a sight!
Rdutch 0 #3 December 14, 2002 I think the concentric is too expensive, and just a gimmick. I have been using the newton sight for the last 3 years and I have no problem knowing where my camera is pointing. I dont think its the sight, that does the job, it is the person looking through the sight. Nothing helps more than practice, The more I jump the less I even use the sight. Now I just look, and know from experience where my camera is pointing. We have a videographer at my Dz that doesnt have any sight at all, he just goes on feel and shoot's great video. You could probably even get away with the orange sight with the black dot, it would work just as good. One cool way to learn sighting is to walk around your house with your helmet on (preferably with no whitnesses) and look at things trying to center them and say it out loud what you are looking at so you can see it when you replay it. You will be surprised in the beginning how difficult it is to center things higher and lower than you. But with a little practice it helps a lot and could save your day if your getting paid for video. Well good luck with your vid and I hope this helps. Oh yeah, the concentric site looks real cool, and if you want to blow extra cash on something that looks cool go for it. But any site will work, all your trying to see is where your camera is pointing after all. Ray Small and fast what every girl dreams of!
quade 4 #4 December 14, 2002 Shooting video without a ring sight is a bit like shooting a gun from the hip. Yes, I'll admit there are people that can do it with practice, but think generally speaking if you want better framed video, you'll have a much easier and consistant time doing it if you have a ring sight of some sort. There's really no question whatsoever about a concentric being more expensive, I'll give you that, but it's no gimmick. It really is more accurate than a Newton.
