ISO Case for Video and Still Cameras

Recommended Posts

I'm searching for a case for my video and still cameras (and maybe even the helmet too). Does anyone have a solution that they think is wonderful?

I've seen a few Pelican cases that had a nice setup. And I've seen one or two cases for the helmet and cameras, but don't know if they were custom made or not.

Tell me what you are using.

You can get specific video cases, but they're almost always rediculously expensive.

Most of the cases you see being used as helmet cases are actually skate cases. You should be able to find them online easily.

Myself, I bought a steel case from Home Depot in their toolbox section for $20. They don't have the foam insert, but there's nothing stopping you from buying some foam. Instead it has compartments with movable dividers. It works real well.

My camera helmet, a large Hawkeye with a pc120 d-box and a stroboframe with a shim on top fits almost perfectly in a hanging file box I got at Staples. It's plastic and has a handle on top, I lined it with some foam from something else. It looks pretty trick and fits like it was custom made for it. $9 bucks. My cameras are in an old Pelican knock-off with pick-n-pluck foam.

I picked up a handgun case to hold my camera's and 6 tapes, cables, remotre, batteries, and everything else I need to shoot video for under $10. I just cut the foam out in the shape of the camera and the storage areas I wanted.

Just to clarify, this thing is really cool. It's a steel suitcase, or briefcase - like the ones used in the movies to carry 10 million dollars or a suitcase nuke. It looks cool, works well, and is real cheap. I recomend it to anyone.

I use a Pelican case for my stuff, its bombproof, carries my laptop, portable HD cam, and all the bits. Pelicans are horribly expensive (I got mine for free--long story), but very good. I used mine offshore a lot, and it took a hell of a beating but protected the gear ok.

I also have an aluminium case, that is intended for tools and stuff, which is as good, but costs a lot less. I got it at a hardware store here in the UK for about 10 bucks.

If you can get a hold of a Pelican Case...do it! They are the best water resistant, dust res, and they take a pounding. However, like everyone else said, they are incredibly expensive. (good ones with pick and pluck foam big enough to fit everything) is somewhere around 250 to 300 dollars.

I went to Walmart and bought a large see through plastic container and got some foam from the camping section. Put it all together for just under 15 bucks. It hold everything... helmet, film, tapes, editing board, cables, remotes, camera suit, every little thing that you can think of. Also, if you can get your hands on some high density packing foam from a factory or shipping place, you can mold it into little compartments for other things.:)
Why spend 250 dollars on a box, when you can save that money for dives. Besides, you can tailor the box to your liking!

Thanks for the info. For those looking for Pelican cases, check out eBay, there are several for under $100. I've decided to try out a DJ LP case -- they are hardsided, foam lined and a decent size. I should be able to fit my cameras and helmet in it. It's not real cheap but not super expensive -- case for $55 and probably $12-15 for extra foam.
