masher 1 #1 March 3, 2003 When buying new gear (container, main & reserve), which bits come with with which pieces of gear? d-bag, PC, risers, freebag... Just wondering...-- Arching is overrated - Marlies

ernokaikkonen 0 #3 March 3, 2003 Yup, a main canopy is just that: the canopy and nothing more. Well, maybe soft links or french links for attaching the canopy to the risers, if the seller feels generous.
nacmacfeegle 0 #4 March 3, 2003 "d-bag, PC, risers, freebag... " From new, all these come with the container, plus both sets of toggles and all the handles. French links also normally come with the container. New risers come with their own toggles. When buying a new canopy (main or reserve) you normally only get the bare canopy. Some canopy manufacturers (Precision) may offer a PC with their mains. If buying second hand, you quite often get, say, a main canopy with a set of risers, toggles etc... riggerrob 643 #6 March 3, 2003 20 years ago manufacturers agreed that canopy manufacturers would supply canopies with lines, sliders and connector links. At the same time, container manufacturers agreed to supply: pilot chutes, deployment bags, risers, toggles, handles and closing loops. If someone sells you a main on risers, he is being generous. If he sells you a main with risers, toggles, d-bag and pilotchute, he is being really generous! But you will probably need a rigger's advice to determine if that d-bag is compatible with your container.

At the same time, container manufacturers agreed to supply: pilot chutes, deployment bags, risers, toggles, handles and closing loops. And it makes sense: a canopy is designed and built with different parameters (planform, lines trim and lenght, type of lines, type and size of slider, ...) each one dependant of the others, so if you want a canopy that opens and flies well, everything must fit together. Same goes for the container: you want a rig with parts that are made to work together. S-P ===========================
