RozeAY 0 #1 July 10, 2002 Hi! I am wanting to get started in aerial photography but don't know much about it right now. I was wondering what types of cameras and camcorders are best liked and what kinds of setups are used. Thanks!
Gravitymaster 0 #2 July 10, 2002 What type of video/photography are you interested in? Teams, Freefly, RW, Tandems etc.
RozeAY 0 #3 July 10, 2002 I would like to be able to do tandem videos but do not want anything huge on my head like I see some people wear. I would also eventually like to video 4-way teams or even some freeflying. I really don't have my heart set on anything right now.
quade 4 #4 July 10, 2002 For a typical set-up with an investment of about $2,000 (pretty damn inexpensive really) check out THIS THREAD.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
PhreeZone 20 #5 July 10, 2002 The one thing I learned so far about video is either do it seriously, or don't do it at all. Straping a camera on makes every jump a different skydive. You have to learn new emergency procedures, it will take a lot of time to learn a camera suit and the sighting to get the type of videos that are judgeable and sellable to tandems. I've droped $2000 into just video and next year will drop at least $600 more getting a different helmet and new gear. Its not a cheap thing to get into. And if the thought of throwing your camera out the door at 5000 feet is too much for you to do, then don't jump a camera since in a mal thats possibly a requirement, taking the helmet off and throwing it away to clear a mal... Also untill you get used to jumping with all the weight on your head, jumping a less likely to spin canopy is good too. Also having a strong neck is a requirement. Those with weak necks don't need to jump camera.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
diverds 0 #6 July 10, 2002 I jump a Sony TRV-30 in a D-box mounted on a bonhead Optik. I really like the setup. It is lightweight and clean. I would send you a pic but it is out at the dz, sorry. The biggest piece of advice I can think to give you is to go with a Sony for your video camera. Most of the skydiving products are designed to work best with Sony cameras and some things will only work with Sony. If you shop around you can get into Sony for not much more money then any other brand. Also, there are some very experienced camera people that frequent this forum so post your questions here and check back often. They are usually glad to help. Have fun and be safe.
