Problem with Cam Eye II

Recommended Posts

I've got one of the 'old' Cam-Eye II's. I bought it when they first came out on the market for use with my PC1. It does not control (on/off/standby,etc) my PC9. It only works as a record/standby indicator light (which is fine by me, since I can switch the PC9 on and off very easily). The new Cam-Eye II's will work with the PC9's (software revision.) If you've got an old Cam-Eye, that's likely your problem.

"anti-ground shooting" thing?

I don't remember the exact name of the function, but that's the gist of it. Yeah, it's a function in some cameras that when you haven't touched the controls for a certain period of time it figures you're done and shuts the camera off. This can save the battery and actually makes a certain amount of sense in certain circumstances. Sometimes you'll see folks with minutes and minutes of footage of the ground, followed by a quick tilt up toward a potential subject, then more minutes of footage of the ground. Kinda humorous in a sick and twisted (not to mention wasteful) way.

I just wanted him to explore ALL the settings on his camera before assuming it was the CamEye II.

I've used the CamEye since they were first introduced and have never had an issue of this type.

The camera shouldn't shut off while its recording though. I know that my trv 17 shuts off after 3 minutes of standby. My friend told me that he had a problem with his cameye 2 shutting the camera off in freefall sometimes. He though that it was because of the angle he had the button mounted to the wind. His best conclusion was that the wind would hit the button in a certain way and turn it off. I don't know if thats possible but that was his conclusion.

It might be the LANC port on your camera. My LANC broke completly this last weekend and the camera is going back to Sony for repairs soon. On the jump before it broke it kept showing red then blue then solid red then nothing then solid red the a flash of blue and it kept things like this up under canopy and all. I unpluged it then tried again and my lanc is dead, the cam-eye operates other cameras, just don't even display a status on mine, and no one elses came-eye can control mine either. More food for thought....

Phree is exactly right. That is a common problem at our DZ. What happens is that every time you plug the cam-eye in, you are putting pressure on the board behind it. After repeatedly plugging and unplugging the cam-eye, you eventually break the board. The only way to prvent this is to tape up the cam-eye connector to the camcorder and never unplug it. This does become a inconvenience though, since you cannot remove the camcorder from your helmet. I am hoping that the makers of the Cam-Eye will address this problem by desigining a cameye that has a break somewhere in the cable that can be disconnected there, rather than at the LANC port board.

Quade, how often are you unplugging your Cameye? On a top mount system I could see it only needing unplugged just to change tapes, but on a side mount in a dbox, at least mine, I have to remove the cameye to open the dbox to look at the video, everytime. Mine made it 9 months and 125 jumps. I'm actively looking into something to make it less stressful on the camera since it's going to cost $225 to fix this issue on the camera.

Hmmm, interesting.

Mine has definately had far more than 125 mating cycles. Heck, for about 300 jumps I too was demating the camera from the helmet (and CamEye) on every jump for debrief purposes. I finally figured out how to control the camera and make dubs with the remote. :)
I can see your point about you having to connect and disconnect more often in general, but a breakdown at 125 cycles would be pretty damn low. My -guess- is that it was designed to sustain about 10,000 cycles before a breakdown -- at least that would be a typical design spec.

I wonder if there is some other force being transmitted to the socket via the plug. Maybe it gets bounced around by the dBox or has some other slight pressure being applied.

Check out the dBox and see if -somehow- there isn't some other force at work here. Maybe it's getting tweeked in transit? How do you transport it from home to DZ? Obviously I'm grasping at straws here, but I'm having a difficult time figuring out how the boys at Sony could have designed the socket on the camera you own so poorly when they've done a great job on others like mine.

Like I said, interesting.

For transist I remove the PC110 from the helmet and put it in a camera box lined with foam. As for the number of connections I'd say its upwards of 350ish, I actually have 150 jumps on the camera and another 150 for end/start of the day connections then the disconnects during the day and ride up to watch the videos again.

There is a tad bit of lateral pressure being applied from the cameye itself in its placement through the Dbox to the camera. I'm wondering if the camera is'nt bouncing a bit in the box and since my cameye is mounted through the box if that little movment against a non moving plug is'nt enough to screw it up.
