efs4ever 3 #1 February 27, 2003 My conventional rig has shot and a half capewells on it that can be difficult to operate sometimes. Does anyone have a set of R3 releases (preferably new) laying around that they'd sell? efs4ever 3 #4 February 27, 2003 It would ruin the ambiance of my OD Green Conventional Rig. R3s are bad enough.Russell M. Webb D 7014 Attorney at Law 713 385 5676 https://www.tdcparole.com
Hooknswoop 19 #5 February 27, 2003 I ment buy a new rig with 3-rings. It will have better pin protection, riser protection, a better reserve system, be more comfortable (probably), spare parts are available, etc. Hook
SkymonkeyONE 4 #6 February 27, 2003 I think he means to say that he is looking for a set of R3's for his vintage gear. I don't think he is implying that he jumps this as his daily gear. Chuck
Hooknswoop 19 #7 February 27, 2003 Ah, I thought he ment his normal skydiving rig, as in not his tandem rig. I haven't heard of a "Conventional" rig. Couldn't find it in Poynters either. Also the DZ he jumps at tends to be "Old School". Poynters Vol I lists some concerns with the R3 conversion kit. Pg 118 and 119, pin length and AL vs. steel rivets. Contacting Capewell may be the way to go, http://www.capewell.com/home.html Hook
councilman24 37 #8 February 27, 2003 Let me ask around. Our DZO used a version of R-3s on his student rigs until he went piggy back. He still uses those harnesses for training. They certainly wouldn't be new. I know at one point I had a tool for setting the rivet holding the pivot. I should still have that around and should have at least one set of rivets to go with it. But, stick with the shot and a halfs. Gutter gear lives.!Remember that there were more than one type of capewell hardware. Not all are compatible. Make sure any R-3's you find will work with your hardware. See Poynters manual for pictures. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
markbaur 0 #9 February 27, 2003 QuoteDoes anyone have a set of R3 releases (preferably new) laying around? Replacing a Capewell with an R3 requires you to remove the long rivet that holds the slide. New R3 kits included replacement rivets, but moving an existing R3 from one rig to another will require you to find an appropriately sized rivet, which you'll have to set yourself. It's not hard to set the rivet, but you might want to buy a couple extra so you can practice. Mark

Chuck Yes, for chits and giggles I take my PC and belly wart around to different DZs and thrill the crowds who haven't seen a round in the air. My daily gear is a Sigma Tandem and a Vector sport rig. lawyerwebb@aol.com http://www.lawyerwebb.com
Jeffrey 1 #11 February 27, 2003 I recommend contacting Jump Shack. They purchased the patent back in the late 70’s and was the last company to manufacture them. Jeff
mikkey 0 #12 February 28, 2003 Oh those memories..... Capewells, Para Commander. I had a Competition Para Commander 20/25 years ago and then my first square 5-cell Strato Star. Chest reserve with no PC, 1 1/2 Capewell releases . - Picture to the left is from 1982 with the gear on. Actually had a cut-away with the Capewells - worked OK, but it does take time and needs co-ordination...... I'll bet you enjoy the jumps in your Para Commander - they are were nice chutes, turn on a dime and in 3-5 knots wind I had standing landings every time. --------------------------------------------------------- When people look like ants - pull.
