NTFS vs FAT32 file system for editing

Recommended Posts

Any comments? Will Fat32 affect video capture speed?
I just partitioned my hard drive for W2k, Linux Dual boot and I can't really use NTFS to do this, but I want to share video with Linux in order to use some of those tools.

Hmmm, not entirely sure, my discs are all FAT32 (had to check which shows you much I now about this) ;)
however if you go here help Ramon there are some smart people who probably can assist.
As usual it would be a good idea to search on the subjects first, and reset the show threads from date xxx thingy.
The folks that post here have helped me in the past, and the guy who runs it..Bob Crabtree, is a wee mine of information, plus he published an article about lil' ole me back in 99, so he's awl right......
Are you having problems capturing, there are loads of things that can slow discs up.....

Don't use NTFS if you are planning to share files. The security on it will cause you inherent problems because that is what NT4/2000 O/S security is based on.
Depending what O/S you are using you also may have Encryption set as a defeult when it was installed as well as compression , none of which you will be able to see from linux.

I'm doing FAT32.
Problem is W2k can access up to 2TB FAT32 drive, but it will only format up to 32Gig and my drive is 80G.
The wonders of MS....sheesh, I have to boot linux to partition my hard drive.

You sure you aren't using WindowsXP? XP will only support 32GB FAT32 partitions. 2000 doesn't have that limitation though. If you have an older machine it could be your bios or controller card that's limiting it as well. Can you see the entire 80GB when you fdisk? If not it's probably a hardware problem.

It formated that harddisk just fine.
I am done and everything works.

Well, you should have told me you needed P-magic, I could have brought you something...
Personally, if you weren't sharing the files across files systems, then I would say NTFS, W2k handles it natively more consistantly and more reliably then FAT32 (my experience), that and the security features available with NTFS when comaired to FAT32 are very important to me. You can, however, run a second harddrive as FAT32 for your other OSes and W2k can mount and use that, but basically the NTFS drive would be unmountable by your other OSes.
