Recommended Posts

Quote

I have finally narrowed my choices of mains to a spectre 210 and a turbo zx 205 I can find both used for resonable prices both are full perosity and 9-cells any input would be greatly appreciated thanks-nic

hey man, a spectre isn't a 9 cell ;)

but get the spectre, it is a great canopy, even if it is a 7 cell.

Hey nic - here's what I think you should do. Spend a little time talking to some experienced jumpers and/or riggers at your DZ. No offence dude, but your info on these two canopies is a bit off. You say both are "full perosity" when in fact they are both "zero perosity." The Spectre is 7 cell, the Turbo ZX is 9. The Spectre is a current canopy, the TZX is a few years out of date. The Spectre will have a way better resale value in 100 jumps.

Don't rush that first rig purchase. I remember the feeling well - you think it's the only good deal that you're gonna find. IT'S NOT!!! There are always great deals on second hand rigs.

Talk to Mike Pintamo at Mile-Hi. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable, but he's also one of the nicer instructors there. If you don't know who Mike is, he's a very big guy who's often seen doing tandems but is also an AFF instructor and he's usually there most weekends. Or just ask for the tandem cutaway king. LOL ;)

Ah I'd say Specter.....Its newer, and opens the best I have ever seen....

And do some more homework...I the ZX is a hybrid as far as I remember.

I demo a Spectre 150 @ Rantoul. Holly crap if it snivels! Great canopy. It flew "bigger" than the hornet 150 I was jumping at the time. On the second jump I, on purpuse, made a very, very bad trash pack and the thing just opened dandy! If I get a birdman suit that is the canopy I want to have.

I have jumped a TurboZX 145 for a couple of hundred jumps, and I also have a couple dozen jumps on a Spectre 150, so here's my take on the comparison:

Spectre
-Zero-porosity
-7 cells
-slightly elliptical
-handles well with a wide range of wingloadings
-more difficult to pack than the TZX(but don't make your decision on this...)

Turbo ZX
-Hybrid(dual-fabric: top skin ZP, bottom skin 0-3cfm fabric)
-9 cells
-rectangular with cut rear corners
-lands like a rock
-easy to pack because of the hybrid construction

I recommend the Spectre. I only jump the TZX because I got it so cheap.

As I'm sure someone has mentioned by now spectres are only 7 cells but a really great canopy. I had over 250 jumps on mine before i changed up and would recommend it to anyone. fun to fly. great openings. great control. if you choose the spectre I'm sure you will have tons of great jumps on it.

The Turbo ZX is a hybrid ZP top and f111 bottom skins and is a 9-cell

Specter is a zp 7-cell tapered or slightly elliptical canopy.

Best comparison to the Turbo is the PD Silhouette which is a 9-cell square with a zp and f-111 combination construction. The Silhouette is also a very nice canopy.
