Looking for advice re: forming/being part of a team

Recommended Posts

I want to devote the next year to 4-way RW. I think the best way for me to do this is to be part of a team so that I can jump with the same people on a regular basis and be able to really focus on improving my skills without having to deal with the issues involved with jumping with different people all the time - fall rate, experience level, etc. I'm going to attend a team building workshop next month, which should provide a lot of good info, but I also wanted advice from other people on what worked for you, what didn't, things to consider when forming/being part of a team, etc. Since this is new to me I would appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks :)

You need to find people with compatible goals. Not necessarily the same goals, but compatible.

You need to plan out what you want to do (training schedule, meet schedule , number of jumps), figure out the expenses, and get everybody to commit before the first practice jump. Nothing sucks more than having the team come apart after one meet because somebody didn't realize how much time or money it would take.

That's about it. Compatible goals, enough time/money, take it seriously, and have fun.

Thanks. Good advice. I know so many people who started out on a team and then had to quit because they couldn't devote the time/money. I know going in how much time/money I can devote and will be looking for people with compatible goals.

You might want to use the folks from Elsinore Gravity as resources. They are cool cats. They're approachable, and being in touch with the local scene, I'm should could help connect you with other jumpers around your experience who might be interested in putting something together. Don't be shy just cause they're good....

Happy teammate hunting.

Whats your future plans?

Great job at nationals.

Edit:
And to throw my 2 cents in....The teammates are the important part.

There are a few cases where people who hate each other with the same goals can jump together....But at what cost? If its not fun whats the point?

Attitude is even more important that skills, money ect.

I have seen teams fall apart due to lack of money, lack of time, and bad attitudes.

When its money people still have a good time when they were together.

When its time people remain friends.

But I have seen teams where one person is an ass, and the entire time spent becomes shit. No matter how skilled, rich, or available a perosn is....If you can't stand being near them...It will never work, and it will NEVER be fun.

So, find three other folks you like, and jump with them.

I love the Elsinore Gravity peeps! I've been doing Excel camps with them for the past year. Even attended a Team Social with them last year. At the time I wasn't ready to be part of a team, but still a great event. I'm hoping they do it again this year. Since I jump at both Perris and Elsinore, I have the option of finding team mates from either/both DZ's. And since I'm in no hurry I can take my time finding the people I am most compatible with. I'm really excited :)

I'm sure there will be another "team building" event at Elsinore. I've also heard that there is a team building weekend at Perris on the Friday before turkey day, but check the calendar or call BC at Perris. The Perris event is usually very good for all levels and they provide for jumps with a coach and those you are considering as teammates.

At both the Elsinore and Perris events, there are usually seminars about team building and the speakers are some of the most experienced in the business (Hammo, BC etc.).

Gravity is also a great resource, as is Fury at Perris.

Hi Evelyn! Yes, I'm here for you, girlfriend! :)mel@skydiveelsinore.com and we can talk about who I know that's out there and available, as well as goals and fit for you, etc. I agree with what everyone has said-- all the details matter, and definitely the vibe thing-- you spend so much time together, you've got to like your teammates! Well, it really helps. Let's chat soon! :)

Yeah, no kidding, you owe me a beer! ;) Don't worry, I won't forget, and I'll be cashing in at Eloy 2006.... Sweet.B|

Yup ... I'll definitely bring some extra cash to pay my debt :P
Are you guys continuing with the same lineup?
See you in Eloy! (if I don't get cut from the team before the Nationals :$:$:$)
