Emmie 0 #1 February 1, 2003 I've been jumping a hornet 170 for close to a year now, and its time to downsize. I am considering trading it in for a Spectre 150. Does this sound like a good plan? I am underloading the 170, and its not a big deal untill it gets a little windy and I end up being holding into the wind for what feels like hours, and am still moving backwards. I found the hornet to be more responsive to toggle pressure than other canopies its size (like every sabre I jumped). Will I get that with a Spectre? Also as a 7 cell, does the performance go down? I am not looking to hook it in or anything, but I thought that the glide ratio decreases with 7 cells. I would totally appreciate any comments on this, since I don't have that much experience with different canopies. Thanks
PhreeZone 20 #2 February 1, 2003 The Spectre is probvally one of the best all around canopies on the market today. I've seen them used as a just off student status canopy to Bridgett swooping hers in the Pnd Swooping Nationals a few years back. The Spectre has a glide ratio very close to that of an original Sabre (slightly better at light loadings accourding to talking to PD) so ask if any Sabre jumpers complain about never macking it back. If you load it up you'll see a difference. If you were staying the same size I could tell you the differences, but since you are downsizing its a bit different. Demo and find out. Its only $40 for 2 weekends of use from PD.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Michele 1 #3 February 2, 2003 Hi, Emmie. I will say I adore my Spectre. I haven't jumped anything else since coming off AFF, so really can't add more than a resounding "I LOVE IT" to the rest of the far more educated responses that I am sure you'll get. It opens well (when my body's correct ) lands well (when I remember what to do ) and handles well in the air. VectorBoy 0 #4 February 2, 2003 I personally think the spectre is better than any thing I flew during AFF. Maybe its too " turny " for students but I feel I could have gone to it sooner. Loved mine want to get another. And at the same time world class vidiots fly them loading them as high as 1.9 and doing 520 degree high performance landings. fool 0 #5 February 2, 2003 It certainly is a fun canopy. Really, it depends what you are looking for in performance though. I don't have all that much experience, but I was loading my spectre 135 at about 1-1 and I got to learn a lot (thanks to an awesome coach) about performance flight (a lot reading a lot more than I knew before...just a drop in the bucket really.) I am now looking for something in a 9cell elliptical, as I jumped a Samurai 120 for the last little bit of the season, and fell in love. Yeah, I guess my point is, it depends what you are looking for. Dumpster 0 #6 February 2, 2003 Hey There- I, Like Michelle, have been jumping a Spectre since student status also - You don't say what your loading will be, but if it's fairly moderate, I think you'll really like it. PDs demo program rocks, and the people there are very cool. You may want to consider a SabreII also, if you have the coin. Easy Does It
174fps 1 #7 February 2, 2003 I have been jumping my spectre for 2 yrs.loaded 1.2 Openings are soft, forgiving on landing I does have a steeper glide angle than the sabre but I can get back from long spots with a little brake. I used to haul on rear riser but found brakes work just as well in most cases.
mouth 0 #8 February 3, 2003 I've really enjoyed mine. She has around 250 jumps for me. My next canopy is a Sabre2 135 (same as my Spectre). I don't play around much with it on landing but I have seen some others who get a really nice swoop on theirs so it is according to how high you load it and how much work you put into it. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit. drenaline 0 #9 February 4, 2003 I've been jumping my spectre since student status, went from a PD 230 to a spectre and I love it, that thing forgives almost any packing (even my last one that the tail only had two soft rolls, if it would of been a sabre I would of been in the hospital making xray of my injured spine), its also easier to pack 7 cells than to pack 9 cells and if you are interested for CReW you can use it.
