Hanging up the Frap Hat

Recommended Posts

Well, we are fast enough now.

I took a knee across the jaw during practice and my mouth didn't close square for 4 days after.

The Z1 is on order. Hopefully shows up this week.

New toys are fun.

Any thoughts on what are good helmuts out there for 4-way? Who removes the visor and uses goggles underneath? Why? I have some thoughts on when I'd rather have the visor vs not but more input would be cool.

Now I'll have three (Frap, Bonehead for freeflying, and the Z1) No helmut used for CrW.

It's going to be a great weekend - mid 70's to mid 80's, light clouds.

Hey Bill!

Who kicked you? Sara?:P

I've got an A3 Oxygen. Generally, the sky systems visors permit a wider field of view. I also like the relative noise reduction of a closed visor helmet.

A few times I've popped the visor open under canopy but the Visor doesn't open as far as the Z1 and blocks some of my forward visual field above me.:| Also I fly fast enough that I end up getting a blast of wind in my eyes which really annoys me.>:(

What color did you order the Z1? lime green?:P

I personally like the Oxygn helmets best--- none of my peripheral vision is blocked (something I found to be true about the Z1, but everyone's different-- I know peeps who swear by theirs because of the easy up and down face shield)-- I keep my shield down under canopy, so that bit is a moot point for me-- I do open it in the plane, and have never really had any problems--- one of my teammates uses goggles under his full face-- I asked him the other day why, and he said that he hates how you keep having to change the shields so often, clean them, yada yada yada-- and he likes the wind on his face. Those things don't matter to me-- I prefer not having to carry around anything but my gloves and my helmet. That's my take!! Hope your jaw heals quickly!! B|;)

Who removes the visor and uses goggles underneath?

----> When the weather turns cold, your breath can condense on the inside of the face shield.........its fine in the plane, but when you get out ...... time to lift the visor....or use the force luke:P for those times goggles would be superior.

Good stuff here - the helmut arrived Friday, just in time for the weekend. It's fantastic. I'll likely take off the shield in the summer and wear goggles under it - but the it's not too bad in any case. Flat black (matte finish). I'm hoping to get at least 2 of my 3 three teammates into serious tunnel time this winter. Then CRANK it up next year.

Just for fun and to keep this forum active, here's a zircon inter and finish

This hasn't been my experience - I've jumped full-face in temperatures down to -30F without significant fogging with the OXYGN. At the same temperatures I've seen guys whose eyes watered and whose goggles froze to their faces after their tears froze.

Bill,
Hope the jaw is feeling better.
Here's what I use:
If I'm traveling, I take my frap hat. It's just easier to travel with then with the Oxygn. Since I'm not doing "hot" four way any more, and when I'm traveling I'm doing bigger way stuff, the frap hat works for me. Also, I don't like wearing the Oxygn when it's hot. But, at the WFFC, since I LO the lower timers, I wear the hard helmet.
For CRW, I have a protec, not like you see with the students. I found it at my local snowboarding store, since I needed one for snowboard. It has removable ear covers that I put on when I'm on the slopes.
When I do were the hard helmet, I lift the face shield up while in the plane. Right as the door opens, I close the shield. Once I've opened my canopy and I have a good one flying over my head, I'll lift up the face shield. For some reason I have a problem landing with either googles or the shield.
Having a hard helmet for the tunnel is a must. Enjoy yourself.

I Have an Oxygen and a Z1. I really like the Z1's face shield. I bumped the button a few times and it opened, but a quick flip of the wrist and it is closed. Now i will be using goggles with both helmets, until the cold weather dictates a full face visor. The little button on the Z1 broke off. This helmet is a few years old. The face shield on my Oxygen just broke. We were doing a hybyrd jump and in my head up arch at the higher speed it just disapeared. It poped open a few weeks ago when the fall rate really picked up. I heard and felt it click shut before exit. The Oxygen is too hard to shut in free fall. I will wear goggles for competition.

This is what I was wondering about and sounds like my current plan - goggles until it gets cold. I've seen a lot of Oxygen shields just pop up and shatter or disappear also.

When I first got my Z-1 I had a little trouble remembering to click it shut prior to exit. A couple times I found myself in freefall with an open visor, but it was no real hassle. Just reach up and close it. I really like the visor and jump it summer and winter. You need to breath through your mouth when you exhale in cold weather to avoid fogging up. I only have about 200 jumps on this helmet and have never jumped the other models, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I really like my Z-1. I almost hate to put on my open faced camera helmet.....Steve1

Harry,
I liked your old picture better. I didn't recongize you. Thanks again for the private coaching at SkyDive Oregon. When I return to Oregon I hope to make a better showing of myself and to have better eye contact. It must have been all the scratch's on my helmet lense that caused me to perform so crappily last time......Steve1
