swarley 0 #1 January 24, 2003 Hi, Newbie Question: In the attached photo of the ripcord in my hand, what is at the end going over my shoulder called? (The brown rectangle) Is it cloth? This was on a tandem rig. Thanks Steve
rmcvey 0 #2 January 24, 2003 Jeeez, you Tandem Instructors! Post the whole picture as its hard to see whats happening. It looks like the drogue release handle. When you pull this handle, the drogue which helps keep the tandem stable in freefall (amongst other things) collapses, pulls the container open, and pulls the bag (with parachute inside) out into the airflow. Its a teflon cable with a small plastic tube at one end for grip. Its hard to explain without showing you a tandem rig.
swarley 0 #3 January 24, 2003 Rob Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense since i pulled the cord and the Canopy was out when this photo was taken. Here is the full picture. My Site
slotperfect 7 #4 January 24, 2003 The small rectangular piece you mentioned is a small piece of velcro that helps keep the drogue release handle secure until it's needed. Arrive Safely John
swarley 0 #5 January 25, 2003 Thanks SP, then this velcro is fitted into the metal spiral tubing back where the closing pin engages to provide friction in the tube. I can picture that.
slotperfect 7 #6 January 25, 2003 Not quite. There are two corresponding opposing pieces of velcro at the end of the housing that mate with the piece you mentioned, that keep the drogue release handle secure. If you get back to the DZ where you made your tandem just ask them to show you. This rig is called a Tandem Vector.Arrive Safely John
