Different Harness Sizes: is there a huge difference?

Recommended Posts

I was offered a complete used rig for really cheap, but i feel it might be a bit to big. I am 5"8 15 lbs. i normally jump rigs that are 16" and 17" in size. But this that i really want is has a 19" harness. Is there a huge difference? should i consider something else?thanks

Talk to the container manufacturer and/or a master rigger with experience doing harness work about the possibility of having the main lift web shortened before you buy that one.

I've jumped rigs that were 1-3 inches too big for me. Even a inch too big was rather uncomfortable.

It really should fit right...and it sounds like 19 inches is too long for you. If the MLW is too long you can run into problems getting the to toggles/slider/etc.

On the plus side, any good Master Rigger can modify/replace the MLW for you for a relatively painless price. We charge about $150-$200, sometimes less (if it's non-articulated).

It can be a safety issue and a performance issue. The container may shift if and put your main PC handle in a different place, different enough that you may not find it. In extreme case you may not be able to reach your toggles, let alone your slider if you want. Don't buy it with out trying it on in the presence of someone experienced enough to know what to look for. You should hang in it and see what's up.

Man I can tell you a easy way to tell if a rig is too big for you..
1.. Put it on, tighten everthing as if you were going to jump.
2.. Now bend over and try to pull the rig over your head while you are bent over..and get out of the rig If it is too big you will come out of it...

I have a rig made to my specs but if i loosen up the leg straps just a two inches or so I can pull the harness off even with the chest strap tight..
I actually bet people for lunch money that I can get out of a strapped rig and they dont believe me, then I do it..

It is very important that you have a rig that fits well .. Period!!!.. Especially if you are going to freefly make sure it FITS!!!! In different types of body positions in freeflying it is very easily capable of coming off if it is too big..

We had a thread about this last summer. Phreezone with everything tightened could do exactly what you posted, while myself unless everything was VERY loose got stuck in some less than pretty positions. I think the end result was if you are going to fall out, the odds of it happening to someone were better if he/she A) is flexible and B) has a long MLW.
Fly it like you stole it!
