Sensory Overload?

Recommended Posts

We jumped yesterday with a very nice girl fresh off the AFP program. She had 36 jumps.
We took her up for a 6 way where we launched a chunk (modified stair step) then built a two way with pods, then turned those. Then built a 3 way with Sidebody's, turned those. Then to a round. I was amazed the skydive went so well. I was excited about it, but she seemed, I dunno - not as excited as me. But, I blew it off.
We took her up on the next load to get her SCR. We built a 9 way, broke it into two rounds, back together. Broke it into two rounds again, back together. So, a 5 point SCR. Again, she was not exactly smiling ear to ear or as impressed as the rest of us were.
So I was thinking she is either overwhelmed with all that happened that day, or she just didn't understand that "they wouldn't all be that successful". Which do you think? I just met her for the first time too, so at this point, you know as much as I do about this sweet girl.
BTW, very very fun video of the SCR Ramon shot.

Not blaming her, In fact I would totally understand if she was sooo incredible overwhelmed that she was speechless. Im just wondering if this is the kind of behavior I can expect jumping with newer jumpers ...or unique for the said situation. I personally wouldn't be able to hide my amazement. Maybe she's shy. Are alot of jumpers just awe struck with Sensory Overload?

I don't think so, I think it is the person. We took a new grad on an 8 way (he didnt' speak much english either). He was pretty nervous, but on the ground he was smiling ear to ear afer landing. it was pretty cool, even got good beer!!! Did you ask her if she was OK?

We asked her if she was OK, If she had fun...we even joked about her line twists after the SCR jump. We were all watching out for her , being nice, high fiving...
She did come up before she left, ask me to sign the SCR sheet and her log book and said she buy the two cases next Sat night (It was Easter Sunday...don't blame her for putting it off for a Sat Night...) -
things that make you go "hmmmmmm" - At least we impressed ourselves!

One of the things I've witness happen a few times with people like this is they EXPECT all future skydives to go that well and cleanly. You can tell them thats the exception and not the norm but untill they experience a funnel at 10k after turning a point or having someone go too low and never make it back in they just don't realize how hard RW is. If on every skydive they are alwo cranking out 10 points but its mostly due to the people they are jumping with, they tend to get Skygodish.... Have them go on skydives that you know will fail before you leave the door. A lot can be learned from those type dives that can't be learned if you are jumping with Airspeed or Majic every jump......
I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend... ~3EB

He he, exactly! We impressed ourselves that we pulled those two jumps off as we planned. Although, I would never condone planning a dive you "knew would fail" (maybe chalk this one up to good organizing) new skydivers will have plenty of chances on their own to be on skydives that don't work.
I guess it's more my problem (not understanding why she wasn't amazed and impressed that these jumps worked) than it is HER problem (never been on a 6 way or a 9 way before).

Hearken back, if you will, when Zennie was a wee jumper just off student status. I sure as heck hope I didn't come across that way after you guys took me up (cause I'm always stoked when I jump with you guys). :)"Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

Course not! Zen, your always having the complete time of your life! She was just completely overloaded. Like a new born baby.
Did I mention she was a damn good flyer for 36 jumps? Must've been , we ain't THAT good! ;)
Maybe we have a new born sky godess on our hands- and RW angle sent to bless us.

Hehe. I do this pretty much on a regular basis. Goes something like this:
"You guys lay a base, and I will try to dock."
Then I spend the majority of the jump flying back and forth over the 2 or 3way that is waiting for me. Well, ok, I have only had the chance to try this a couple times so far. :)Granted I am sure that if everyone involved was actively working to put the 4way together instead of just falling with the base, it would come together easily, but I then I wouldn't learn anything. ;)
Note to self: When you get close to the formation pull legs back in some to stop or slow your forward movement. :)"Fixing the world through self-destruction."
