TomAiello 26 #1 January 21, 2003 I have some break cord (used for tying static line knots) that I submerged in water. Is it still good, once it dries off? Or do I need to replace the lot?Can anyone tell me?-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
GroundZero 0 #2 January 21, 2003 When it dries, it will do so inconsistently.... i.e. who knows what break strength that piece will have. (I thought BASE jumpers used 1/2" black electrical tape...) If it's the breakcord that most people use.... cotton... strength will vary when wet. But what are your parameters? If it's for base, why not use electrical tape anyway... it won't change properties in our jumping lifetime. Chris
skygod7777 0 #3 January 21, 2003 if it were me, i'd get some new break cord, just in case, you never know. i mean, you are depending a lot on that shit when you use it.later
cobaltdan 0 #4 January 21, 2003 hey tom, if it was simply wet and dried t is probably fine, but prolonged moisture can cause mildew and weaken the fibers considerably. but the stuff is cheap enough to replace. why risk it? be safe. sincerely, dan<><>Daniel Preston <><> atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)
rigging65 0 #5 January 21, 2003 You could always do some pull tests on it to see where it's breaking at...use a fish scale (a highly calibrated one, of course) "...and once you had tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward. For there you have been, and there you long to return..."
