Genie 0 #1 January 8, 2003 Hi I have a 7 cell reserve which so far i have only seen as my rigger repacks it (fingers crossed that this will continue!) but i know 7 cells fly differently to 9 cells. If i had to open this canopy ( assuming it opens ok) what should i be aware of in flying it? ie Does it glide more or less than a 9 cell? How do they flare - shoudl it be higher or lower than my normal main? I know most accuracy canopies are 7 cell - but i dont know if all 7 cells are accuracy canopies... If i keep current weight i would be loading it at about 1.06 : 1. - would that have any effect? Its a Cricket 147 btw. Thanks in advance for your help Genie
dragon2 2 #2 January 8, 2003 Weell not all 7 cells are accuracy chutes :) Unless you count CREW chutes as accuracy flying (hmmm maybe there´s something in that ). Also you got regular main chutes like Spectre, Triathlon, Omni, Omega, and some high performance chutes have 7 cells (or a multitude thereof) as well. I´ve jumped more 7 cell chutes than 9 cells. This is what I found: Generally 7 cell chutes don´t glide as well as 9 cells do. You may have to help a bit by rear-risering if you want to make it back from a long spot. You also don´t have as much flare to work with. I think they´re easier to land, but not everybody agrees. That said, I have only once had a reserve ride and that was on a student type reserve, ie very big so not much trouble to land. Don´t really know if you can compare a reserve to a (recent) 7 cell main, cause it´s F111 and stuff. Maybe jump a Triathlon 150 a couple of times range to get the feel for it?? But that´s a ZP canopy. As for flaring lower or higher, hmmm, eh, flare when you hear the crickets?? not really sure if I flare differently now that I have a 9 cell main, kinda depends on the main and on the lines more I think. ciel bleu, Saskia
councilman24 37 #3 January 8, 2003 Don't expect it to surf, don't expect to do a two stage flare. Practice flaring in the air if you have time. Try to find the stall point so you don't stall it on landing. Probably flare a little higher, faster, and farther. Performace isn't so much that its 7 vs 9. (see all the modern 7 cells) But zp vs 0-3 cfm fabric and WING design and trim. My Triathlon 190 (7 cell) had the same forward speed and maybe a little flatter glide angle than my sabre 190 (9 cell), measured with an anemometer (sp?). Flares weren't much different, a little. A 200 sq ft Maverick, bigger version of your cricket, wouldn't go as fast or far. And my 5 cell Cirrus cloud would out glide a 7 cell fury side by side. But didn't land for s**t. (Any body want an airworthy Cirrus Cloud?) Another example, after a badly busted leg I had a Manta for awhile and then a Sabre 190. When I wanted a guarenteed soft landing, I picked up the Sabre. Stop worrying, be prepared to PLF, land the silly thing, and buy BEER, and more BEER. Ask around. You can probably find a maverick main to tryout. I'm old for my age. skybytch 273 #4 January 8, 2003 Actually jumping an F111 7 cell in a non-emergency situation (i.e. as your main) is going to tell you far more about how your reserve will fly than any of us can tell you here. PD will send you out a demo set up for jumping as a main; you can probably also easily find an older Raven to test jump. The Cricket was also sold as a main; look around, you may be able to find one the same size as your reserve in someone's closet.
