Comp loadings for VX?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I recently managed to get an old VX 79 that was owned by a mentor of mine who is sadly no longer with us.
Anyway - I had a bunch of reasons for wanting the canopy but after a dozen jumps on it I was starting to like it more than my Velo's! It had a surprising amount of performance and actually opens really well with my velo RDS. So well that I have been using it when shooting tandems! Anyway am loving the feel of the canopy and maybe thinking about flying the canopy at the nationals (in just a few weeks). Realise that it is not enough time to dial in the canopy (maybe get 50 jumps on it) but would be really cool to run his canopy.

- At the moment - not keen to load up on weights at the moment with this canopy but curious to see people's experience on VX's have been at higher loadings? More specifically relating to comp, where did you notice a drop off in performance? What did you prefer to fly it at?

Next weekend (not working) I will jump the velocity with weights so that I am at an equal loading and see how they fly one after the other.

(I normally jump a velocity 90; in comp (and whenever I can!) I usually go with about 10kgs of lead for a 2.2 loading. Without weights I am around a 2 wingloading. With the VX79 I am running at about 2.2-2.3 without weights. I have about 300-400 jumps on VX's and about the same number on my velocities.)

i liked my VXs best probably between 2.3-2.4. At 2.5+ i felt a drop in distance and glide. I've put a combined of i'd guess 1300 jumps on various VXs (114, 111, 104, 97, 96 and 94) with wing loadings of 2.0 to 2.5+
