TrashTash 0 #1 January 4, 2003 I want to buy my first rig. I weighed 210 in the door. In my opinion, this deal looks good: Spectre 170 (825 lbs Microline) Speed 170 reserve. max. recommend exit weight 212 (very popular here in europe, because it works and packs really amazing small) Tear Drop, hip&chest rings stainles steel, dive loops, harness type 7, mini riser type 17, hacky (BOC), soft reserve pad. And Cypres of course. Is this OK for the first? Blues
PhreeZone 20 #2 January 4, 2003 Actually.. its probally a tad small for a first rig based on the info you posted here in my opinion. With out knowing previous canopys, experience, currency, things like thats its hard to call, but here is my conservitive opinion: A 170 main puts you at a 1.2:1 loading. Thats on the heavy side for a first rig, a slight mistake will not be pretty. A 210 main would be ideal, but a 190 is the smallest I'd reccommend. The reserve is also on the smallish side untill you get more experience. Simple question. First jump on the rig, you cutaway and are under the reserve at 1300 feet, long, over a housing complex, can you land the canopy in some ones back yard if needed? If the answer is no, find a reserve size that you can land there. I've landed my main in a few backyards and opted to get a larger reserve to make that easier to do. The soft reserve pad I generally reccommend all new jumpers stay away some untill they get more experience and show either a need for it or prove they can use a normal D ring by using their reserve. Its just s odifferent from the student gear there is a good chance of not operating it properly if the time comes on the first few jumps on the gear.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Casch 0 #3 January 4, 2003 I'm just newbie too, but are you ready for a 1.24 wingloading? What are you flying right now?

councilman24 37 #5 January 5, 2003 That might not be a bad first rig to own, but I doubt that your ready for it yet. Based on your last post you have NO ZP experience. In my opinion as an instructor and a rigger for 20 years you should start with nothing smaller than a 210 ZP. Flying these will be very different than the PD 210. Get some friendly or formal instruction. If rental is available you might not want to buy one this big but is wouldn't hurt. I'd suggest that at least a couple of hundred jumps before you might want to get quite that small. But I'm conservative. Read the articles here for some valuable education. My guess (pretty positive) is that PD wouldn't recommend this at your level. http://www.performancedesigns.com/education.aspI'm old for my age.
