Hooknswoop 19 #1 December 21, 2002 So I just got a new toy, a Garmin Etrex Vista. I was asking about GPS's and wing suits and some software was mentioned. So I went to Garmins web page and looked for updates. My GPS came w/ ver 2.40. Ver 2.50 was avaiable for free download and included a "Jumpmaster" feature: http://www.garmin.com/manuals/236.pdf I think it is mainly for military use, but it looks cool anyway. Hopefully I will be able to try it out this weekend, putting in the winds aloft, etc and see what I get. Hook
LouDiamond 1 #2 December 21, 2002 If you would like to understand how to obtain a HARP and use the Garmin jumpmaster feature I recommend you look for the thread titled" Do bad spots really exist?" I posted a Power point presentation that explains wind drift and how to obtain ones HARP, calculate for forward through, wind drift and free fall drift etc. That is what the jumpmaster feature you mentioned was designed for. It comes in really handy when you do HAHOs(X country) jumps since it points you in the direction you need to go. You will need a topographical map and protractor to plot and calculate distances. I recommend 1:50,000 scale as it's easier to use for ground based work. You can obtain them in most hiking stores or on some imagery web sites. I think this will prove to be really helpful for birdman applications since you can actually calculate exactly where you need to get out to make it back to the DIP(desired Impact Point) instead of the dreaded SWAG(Scientific Wild Ass Guess). The only thing I think might need to be changed somewhat in the formula is the safety factor since you will undoubtly get more penetration than a ram air canopy or free faller while in flight. Once under canopy you should fall with in all listed factors that are listed in the PPT show. If you need any more info PM me since the PPT show will probably need some explanation if you've never had to calculate winds before or if you just have a question."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
jumpy 0 #3 December 21, 2002 Thats pretty damn cool! The only thing i don't like about those instructions is the term Desired IMPACT point Not the best term for skydiving related activities...
Hooknswoop 19 #4 December 21, 2002 I think the point of the "jumpmaster" feature, is that it calculates the HARP, makes it a waypoint, and then points the JM to the HARP. It does the work your PP presentation explains how to do. It takes values for winds aloft, type of dive (HALO, HAHO, and STATIC), K values for FF and Canopy, exit altitude, opening altitude, foward throw, etc. BTW- 150m (492.3 ft) forward drift from a jumpship w/ a jump run speed of less than 120 kts seems awfully high. LouDiamond 1 #5 December 21, 2002 Actually , if you read the jumpmaster pdf file you will see that the example they give even states that there is a more detailed description that isn't covered in the document. The PPT show I posted gives that explanation and actually teaches you how to do what the GPS in a sense does for you. One thing not addressed in the pdf file and of importance is if the software can recognize incompatibale winds and correctly calculate for it. i am assumin gthat it can since it can already calculate for doglegs. On the forward throw of 150m: that has been determined to be a constant for calculation purposes. Actual distance may vary but I think it's actually a pretty good median distance. The safety factor more than makes up for any deviation from the 150m in forward throw."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
cobaltdan 0 #6 December 21, 2002 if you think 'jump master' is cool check out: http://www.extremefly.com/aerospace/products/flightcomputers/gps.html we added a infite screen for navigation to our datalogging gps/flight computer. 1 screen to navigate blind to your intended target, no buttons to press, etc... we will be demonstrating it with a 1/4 vga lcd screen and also one with a helmet mounted laser retinal scanning display at the pia. sincerely, dan<><>Daniel Preston <><> atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)
