Jason Thanks and I really dont want to down size yet..I just wanted to get the feel of witch canopy to get when I do .I only jumped a Saber 2 since student stats .I jump my ass off and did 150 jumps in 4 months. So if I keep that pace up I think it will be around 400 before I down sizeNever give the gates up and always trust your rears!
Pulse 0 #8 March 8, 2007 QuoteI am going start swooping this summer What exactly do you mean by this? What is it to 'start' swooping?"Any language where the unassuming word fly signifies an annoying insect, a means of travel, and a critical part of a gentleman's apparel is clearly asking to be mangled." dharma1976 0 #9 March 8, 2007 when you come up to the ranch this spring and look for me...let me show you what a sabre2 170 can do :-P Admittedly I load the sabre2 170 at what you will load the 150. At that loading the sabre2 series taught me everything I know about swooping...(Of course I could have done that under another similar planform, I just happened to have a sabre2 at the time) Davehttp://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. yardhippie 0 #12 March 8, 2007 I remember my Saber 170. thats what I started swooping on. I went to a Nitro, a HiPer canopy. Loved it, and the customer service. trigger 0 #13 March 8, 2007 If you would like to save some cash i,d reccommend an orignal Safire1. Don't what the '2' is like, but i liked the original, sweet canopy imo..CHOP WOOD COLLECT WATER.
Pendragon 1 #14 March 8, 2007 Safire2 is good, as is the Pilot. Sabre2 will likely feel more aggressive at the same wingloading on front risers-- BASE #1182 Muff #3573 PFI #52; UK WSI #
skyshimas 0 #15 April 5, 2007 could you guys compare these canopies safire2, sabre2 and pilot? I fly sabre1 170 now and I don't know any better because I haven't jumped any other canopies much. Once I'll be ready to go 150 I would like to know which one is most aggresive and best to practice swoops on and other characteristics. Is there any other good choice of canopies on the market for beginners?

Is there any other good choice of canopies on the market for beginners? There are plenty of X vs Y, just search for that. If you think about swooping I'd drop Pilot out of the picture. Making a 90 degree FR landing from 80-90 is a bit sick. Pilot is trimmed really flat.
dharma1976 0 #17 April 5, 2007 I learned to swoop on a sabre2 170...I jumped the pilot and didnt like it for learning to swoop (and also broke my leg on it trying to get that positive recovery arc to work out) I hear wonders about the safire as well, so heres the trick...call PD ask for Kim Pathousje (Pronounced Pothouj and my spelling is probably wrong) Ask her for a 150 demo. Then hit up http://para-concepts.com/Store/product_info.php?cPath=30_33&products_id=70 and get the 149 demo that seems to be in stock and fly them both and see what you think Then ask around and see what else is out there. skyedivr 0 #18 April 5, 2007 here is the product listing for the sabre2 on Performance Designs website. Call them, let them know what you have, and want to do. Im sure they would be happy to help you out. IMO sabre 2 is a good choice. http://www.performancedesigns.com/products.asp?product=samy power is beyond your understanding. skyshimas 0 #19 April 5, 2007 thanks for advices. I heard some good thinks about safire 2 so I will consider it when it is time to downsize. But i am not ready yet since i am not pushing anything out of my 170 (doing 180's only) in a year or two i'll try both. I just wondered if anyone here tried them already and could give me some feed back, but in this forum seems like everyone is far past this level and flying real stuff
dharma1976 0 #20 April 5, 2007 I will be visiting your dz this summer a few times as work is like 30 minutes on a good day from there... let me know what days you are usually around and we can chat in person... I will come to eat your entire landing area....and pack students who need rigs and get yelled at by instructors.... skyshimas 0 #21 April 5, 2007 I'll be there every day except some(most) sundays. I am packing there. I looked at the couple of threads but didn't find what i was looking for. I see people like pilot a lot and safire2 but mostly because of their openings glide ratio and so on I want the canopy from this class which would be most aggressive and prapare me for swooping some time in a far future. I don't want to fly a most forgiving canopy and when its time to go to eliptical or semi eliptical (or whatever is the next step is) be overhelmed by its performance. so which one is the swoopiest? anybody? it seems that it would be sabre2 safire 2 and then a pilot? phoenixlpr 0 #22 April 5, 2007 QuoteBut i am not ready yet since i am not pushing anything out of my 170 (doing 180's only) Wow! Can you nail 90 degree landing every time in place, consistently? I'm still not having more rotation, than 90 degrees and I'm still not satisfied.
hisgoofyness 0 #23 April 5, 2007 Not mentioned in your list... but a Nitro 150 might be a good choice as well. Contact Beezy @ www.hiperusa.com I have a Nitro 135 and love it! It has great range in speed. Goudha is for Buddha, and that's good enough for me!
dharma1976 0 #24 April 5, 2007 I know a guy named hippie bill (you may know him).... He flew a sabre 170 for a long time lading it about 1.1 ish and swooped it by basically flying his pattern using his front risers softly in a carving motion...he spent a long time doing this...then one day he decided at like 1800 jumps or so that he was ready to downsize to a 150 vengence after and only after he recieved word from PD that when he sent his canopy in for a new lineset that they had decided to do a wind test on it and it blew out 3 panels.... there is a lot to be learned from hippie bill.... But I will come check you out and talk to you about this in person...also talk to Robson...he is a safe and cautious instructor and has a great head on his shoulders for this stuff.... dharma1976 0 #25 April 5, 2007 also this note....you are on the right size to learn... at about your jumps I decided I needed a 150 and bought a pilot 150 because I needed something "swoopier" thatn my canopy to learn on which was a safire 1 179. I learned that it sucks to bounce when I didnt really have the eye for what I wanted to do... I then upsized to a 170 sabre 2 and learned a shitload about swooping on it which I then transfered to a 150 sabre 2 and then down to current canopies... what I will say is this....contact kim at pd and the wqebsite that I mentioned and demo a 169 safire2 and a 170 sabre 2 let me know via PM when you have them and I will come down there and pass on some knowledge that was passed on to me by some damn good teachers...I will even spend some time doing some high hop and pops with you should manifest and pilots agree to it....
