SE CPC #1 - Lake Wales

Recommended Posts

Just so everyone knows, it appears there is some sort of event going on the weekend of the CPC (2/24) and hotel rooms, even at the Green Gables (which also raised there rates) are booked.

I had to suck it up and book at the Super8 right up the road from the dz, which last time I was there wasn't so great but I just need a shower and place to crash. I will have space, if anyone comes and wants to share costs for a hot shower ;) I have the room Friday and Saturday.

So who is coming to play on the SE CPC this year?

Drop me a note - first come first serve.

oh come now, though........compete......it is a GREAT learning experience seriously. Everyone is awesome (was awesome last year) about giving you feedback. Jay Moledski (if he is still coming) as far as I know will be on hand and is AMAZING about watching each person and trying to find something to give you back. If swooping is where your heart is right now, I promise you, the CPC is a really good learning tool (don't I almost sound like an advertisement?...ha ha ha)

Compete - don't be scared - we are all friends!

Look forward to seeing you either way.

Not afraid of competing.. afraid of getting broken. New wing. New DZ. New to gates.... Yes, I owe lots of beer ;). There will be other comps.

Edit to add:
Jairo just called, and I've been talking so much smack to him, he'll never let me live it down if I don't compete, so I may throw my Vengeance back on the risers and just compete with it. [:/] I think I can at least give people a run for their money with it. :D
Shhh... you hear that sound? That's the sound of nobody caring!

The CPC is awesome. But you really need to be running gates many many many times in practice before you attempt to run them in the higher stress realms of competition.

Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

this isn't directed a single person but people in general...getting better (if that's what you want to do) is not just about running the gates and getting a ton of practice. it's about being around people better than you that straight up kick your ass, then picking their brains, watching what they due, asking for advice, and so on. that's why the CPC is so great, you feed off of other people's energy and it makes you get better. but you do have to risk getting your ass kicked from time to time.

I've run gates made from swimming pool noodles before... I'd guess about 4'? Something like that, anyway... But to your point, I don't even know how high the competition gates are, nor how far apart. [:/]

I sent an email to info@flcpa.com, to try and get info, but the email bounced back. Come to think of it, I don't even know what time I need to be there, or what time it starts. :S

I know I need to pay the $65... but I'm just paranoid when it comes to blindly sending money off on the Internet... especially when I don't know how to contact the person I'm giving my money to. [:/]

Jeff, Chris Hayes is the meet director and thus the keeper of any money you send off for that event.
You can get a hold of him at chris@getsum.tv, that e-mail should work just fine.

If nothing else, I encourage you to come on down to Lake Wales for the weekend and watch, you can learn a ton by just being around it. Hell, I'll put you to work as a judge - learning the rules is not a bad place to start!!! ;)

See you Saturday!

Hey Jeff

Good to hear you are interested in competing this year.
Sorry for the info email link on the website. It should work now.

Amateur competition gates are 10' high and 24' wide.

So if you are thinking of competing you will need to be there by 8 am.

We always do one manditory practice load in the morning for people who are just arriving the day of the comp. When and if you move up to National or Pro comps, people usually arrive the day before to do some practice jumps, but in the amateur league, people do not usually arrive until the day of the comp. So we let everyone get at least one jump to look at the course from the air and get a practice jump in before competition round 1.
The courses will be set up on Friday if you are thinking of coming in on Friday though.
So then we usually do the briefing around 9:15am and then try to start the comp by 9:30am. If everything goes well and we do not get any weather holds or other delays we are usually done by 4, do the awards and drink a beer.
So the $65 will go towards Southeast league expenses and we always get a trophy at the end of the year for the overall winner.
The first year Ian Bobo won it and received a nice trophy, then in 05 Tyler Lawson took home the belt and in 06 Tom Delibac got his Championship trophy.
If you have any other questions you can email me directly at

chrishayesjumps@yahoo.com
or you can call my cell at
386-527-9907

Well hope this helps and hope to see you out at the pond.
By the way, Tom Delibac has the Lake Wales pond looking like it did for the 2003 World Championships held in Lake Wales. Manicured and full with no lip and groomed sand landing areas.
It looks very nice.

Thanks and see you soon
Chris Hayes

Thanks Chris!

I think that answered all of my questions! I feel MUCH more comfortable now.

I'll plan on being there, if for no other reason, just to learn the rules. Thanks again!

Stu - been trying to tell you to just move your ass here for what, a year now. So stop whining about your damn poison oak - it's as easy to make happen as 1-2-3....(ok maybe not THAT easy but still.......):P

Jeff - Stu is SPOT ON with his first comment about all you gain on the learning by just being around and/or part of the CPC. I used to help judge and learned the rules, then I sucked it up as I was learning to swoop last year and competed because everyone has to start somewhere and the knowledge is EVER-FLOWING ...and I got my ass kicked OFTEN yet left every comp with a smile.

Seriously - it's not all about winning so if you can put THAT out of your head and just learn while you do your thing - you get your cake and eat it too...sorta.

Big props to Tommy D - he normally hooks things up when he knows we are coming to play on the pond. i'm sure it is awesome (are the gators gone? )

I've got lots of bites on the room sharing, now I have to decide WHO.....I feel so....so.......powerful

Come to Lake Wales.B|:)B|

HOLY COW - what a turn out we had for the first Southeast CPC Meet. 24 Competitors total, including 6 Pros (but Chris Hayes sacrificed his slot on the already stuffed Otter so everyone who traveled the distance (from Mississippi, Virginia, Georgia and even one came all the way from NY). AWESOME EVENT with much thanks of course to Chris for getting it going again this year and all the judges and course helpers (props to Justin for being in and out of the water thru out the day for course changes and also the numerous noodle strikes!

Quite a few showed up Friday so we made a handful of practice jumps, got much of the registration done early and Saturday came and things got going despite the winds, which teatered RIGHT ON the edge of the comp limits all day long. Everyone did great with managing them for the most part.

I'm sure Chris and his awesome new WIFE (yes, wife....) Michelle will have all the scores up soon. Ryan from Lake Wales took first place, scoring in every round and I'm not going to begin to try and remember all the rest. Top 10 had some names like Loud Dan, Brian Buchler, Adrain Hart, Delibac, Zuliani, Scott Roberts, Isaiah....bla bla bla.......pull the Pro guys out of the mix and I placed 15th B| which I was STOKED about. Working hard, constantly learning, gradually moving up and ALWAYS HAVING FUN!

Thanks also to Jay Mo who came out for the day and was our "voice of assistance". Trust and confidence....Trust and Confidence ;) My goal for next round would be to INSPIRE some more GIRLS to come play. If you love flying your canopy and are willing to make a small investment for the sake of learning - the CPC is the perfect spot for it.

Congrats to everyone for a great meet - simply showing up makes you all winners in my eyes (plus I just love seeing you all :$). Until Sebastian, practice safe!!!!

I, especially, would like to echo that thanks as well! To Chris especially, for taking the time to not only organize the event, but for his patience in my 'learning experiences'. :D

Yes, this was huge, and I could go on and on for paragraphs about how his coaching and encouragement helped throughout the competition.

FOR THOSE THAT HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT COMPETING, BUT HAVEN'T:
This was my first competition. Like you, I read numerous posts saying, 'come out, you learn so much', but nobody ever gave specific examples, so I was quick to dismiss it, thinking, 'I can learn to swoop at my dz'. Well, here are some things I learned in competition, whereas it would take ALOT of time and jumps to learn this through general experience.

I learned how hard I could push my canopy in a carve. Like most, I learned how to carve as an obstacle avoidance technique (and to look cool ;))at the dz, but never really pushed carving turns beyond that.. Well, there is a definite difference between initiating a carve when you want to, and initiating a carve when you need to.

Swooping in 14mph crosswinds was never a big deal at the dz - did it all the time. I could always make adjustments to safely land 'close' to where I wanted to. 'Close' doesn't cut it in competition. Working on this type of precision is guaranteed to make me a better 'beer line swooper', and teach 'swooping' canopy control.

I learned humility. There's nothing like showing up to your first CPC Competition, at a new DZ, surrounded by alot of people you don't know, wanting to make a good first impression, and then proceed to splash into the pond during the practice round. Again, I like to think of myself as one of the better swoopers at my home DZ, and sitting there, trying to get a hundred pounds of water out of an airlocked (waterlocked, in this case) canopy was pretty humiliating.... :$ It builds character though, right?! :D

Yeah, the above is probably some pretty basic stuff to some people, but to those of us new to competition, this is a whole new world. So... with all my initial doubts and reluctance, I have to say this truly was a learning experience I'm looking forward to next month!

At the end of the day, I ended up placing far better than I expected. No money, of course, but I did leave with alot more knowledge and experience than I showed up with!

Jeff

edit to add: made lots of new friends there as well. Had a great time meeting you guys, and look forward to seeing you next time!

I gotta give it to you Jeff, you've got heart bro. Congrats on swooping the Velo so well, especially after the airlock to waterlock conversion process (also known as swimming). Hope you can make it up here to Georgia for the competitors camp and squeeze more of that knowledge stuff out of Jay Mo's head. Keep up that positive vibe, and remember not only does fat go fast, it goes far too.

I AM WINNING!!!!

Nice write up Jeff and congrats again on your placing..............You heavy wing loaded BIOTCH! B|

I might only be loaded at 1.5 and might not be flying a crossbraced yet but I'm learning my wing each and every jump. I'm gonna give everyone a run this year - WATCH OUT! ;)

See everyone in Sebastian in a few weeks.
