Expected canopy performance

Recommended Posts

Hi, probably seen me lurking round asking few questions. Well I shall be buying a second hand rig tomorrow (subject to good inspection)

Im 200lb minus kit, with a 230 Sabre 2 (only 30 jumps) what sort of performace can I expect.
I dont have any issues with the size, instructors have approved it. Rigger just wants to inspect it first.

I really love the canopy ride but these damn manta 280s are just too slow! :P Is this gonna be a nice improvement for me. I have no interest in swooping and that stuff because that shit gets you hurt (and im scared of heights, so im nervous on approach anyway)

I would like to know if with practice I can be carving up the sky (with plenty of air between me and the ground) and maybe do some of the amazing spiralling I see. I dont know the technical term im afraid. But I love watching jumpers when they are completely horizontal under canopy turning.

Not to panic, I dont plan on going, having a go, and killing myself. Im gonna consult my instructors and sign up for the canopy course too. So no extremely informative 'ask your instructor' replies please. :P

You are going to see a significant increase in forward speed, rate of turn, and flare power under your new canopy. You will be loading it at about 1:1, so that doesn't concern me to much. Make sure you get an experienced person (an Instructor) to talk you through the differences you are going to have to deal with and to watch and critique your initial landing(s). Common mistakes people make when making such a change in canopy size/type are: flaring too high, flaring too hard (one stage), and overshooting their intended landing area.

My first canopy was a Sabre 2 230 and we seem to be about the same weight. I think you'll enjoy it. It will have much sharper response than the student canopies but should be forgiving enough for the inevitable mistakes we all make when starting out.

You will, relatively speaking, be able to do some aggressive maneuvers up high that you couldn't do on the student canopys. I would recommend consulting a good canopy coach before doing anything aggressive though. As you downsize you can force the canopy into a bad situation, loss of line tension, induced line twists ect, much more easily.\

Isn't new gear great:ph34r:!?

It only hurts if you get it wrong!!:S
Good safe swooping canopy pilots show some of the most awesome canopy flying skill and judgement, in my opinion.
Being scared of the canopy flight and landing is a challenge for you to overcome, and you never know what you might be into with your canopy in a few hundred jumps!!

Anyway sorry to go off topic......stay safe, have fun!

Pull high and figure out if your brakes are set up properly. It is very common that people assume that the toggle setting is perfect from the factory, but this is not often the case.

If the risers are not the standard 21-22 inches, you will need to modify the toggle setting. Further, if your canopy is used, the brake lines will have shrink faster than the suspension lines, shortening the toggle stroke. This will place the stall point higher, and cause the front risers to be unstable when used with the brakes in your hands.

You are a test jumper each time you fly a new canopy. Take your time and evaluate each parameter of performance. Never assume that things are as they should be.
