lawrocket 3 #1 April 23, 2005 I've just read about a swoop in excess of 500 feet. It's leading me to wonder about forward speeds on canopies. I suppose that forward speeds are limited by the amount of drag on the canopy. But I'd like to know how fast these canopies can go forward. What's the max speed in the downward portion? What's the max speed upon entering plane out? How fast are these guys moving under canopy? My wife is hotter than your wife.
PhreeZone 20 #2 April 23, 2005 I believe hooknswoop was clocked way over 60 mph via radar. Speeds of 50mph + are certainly possible.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

Hook reached about that during the swoop, and 98mph during his dive, IIRC.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

chutem 0 #6 April 24, 2005 Is it "easy" to get a radar speed reading from a canopy/pilot? I ask because my son got a radar gun for christmas last year. I never considered useing it on swoopers. I've been curious about how fast these guys really are. The radar gun he has is a "low end" type of unit do you think it would work? James

kaerock 1 #9 April 25, 2005 I took a wind meter up with me when I demoed a velocity 103 loaded at about 2.0 and found I was moving at 25mph in a full glide and 65mph in a sustained harness turn at about 2000ft. It seems almost inconceivable to hit 98mph like someone posted, but with enough wingloading and a small enough canopy, sure. QuoteI've just read about a swoop in excess of 500 feet. kelpdiver 2 #11 April 26, 2005 So is full face helmet a given for dealing with the wind and minimizing the drag?

Quote How about Luis Cani under the VX-39? I think he got up to about that speed, I could be wrong, just remember reading it somewhere. I wear a 1/2-shell helmet on my motorcycle and have driven similar speeds to pass vehicles on roads before. The winds isn't that big of a deal on how it feels. As for the drag, who's to say, but there's a certain PD swooper with a certain funky helmet that keeps setting swoop records.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." I don't know that I'd see well enough to trust it for the task. Half helmet definitely has more drag than a full, but couldn't say if its drowned out by the much more significant body. I need to see some video of a big competition. Is it an event at Nationals, or its own tour?
