tmoran 0 #1 April 13, 2005 Hello to all ! I am failry new to the sport and recently got my own equipment. I wanted to get some ideas on swooping drills that I could do while I am still high, (1000 +) to practice on and get good at ? Please specify riser technique, turn degrees, and toggle techniques to practice... Thanks for your help !
ianmdrennan 2 #2 April 13, 2005 The new USPA sims have some good drills to go through. Other drills would be a riser turn of 180 or more followed by a "save your life flare". Start learning how much/little you can put in, how fast/slow you can put in the input and how the wing reacts to each scenario. Also I'd suggest getting all your drill practice done above 2000 feet. Lower than that you should be focusing on your setup/approach/holding area and not spiralling around getting in other peoples way. It also gives you a greater margin of safety should something go wrong that requires a cutaway or fixing. One of the BEST things you can do right now that'll start helping you immediately to get ready for swooping is flying consistant, clear patterns. Get your accuracy down using those. Also focus on smooth flight. Swooping is about efficiently generating as much energy as you can and then holding on to it as long as you can. The best way to do this is smoothly and efficiently. Good pattern technique will help when it comes time to start setting down your swoop at a specific point. Spending time mastering the slower (ground) speed aspects of your canopy flight will ultimately speed up your results. Oh, and take a CC course as soon as you can. superstu 0 #3 April 13, 2005 where do you jump? if you have 'good' swoopers at your dz just ask them for their advice. just take EVERYONE'S advice with a grain of salt.Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down
scottthefreak 0 #4 April 14, 2005 Depending on your experience level (checked the profile, but didn't see anything), you should take things slowly! Keep in mind that as you bring your maneuvers closer to the ground, you will encounter more and more variables (i.e. obstacles, canopy traffic, aircraft, etc..). You could think of it like flying into a funnel. The closer you get to the ground, the more active things become. Granted, you should always be aware of your surroundings but when you start high performance landings, things speed up and your awareness level needs to increase accordingly. ALWAYS have an out!! Anticipate the unexpected and NEVER stop flying your canopy!! Also, when you decide to bring these drills down to the landing area, pick an area with as few obstacles as possible and start small! Talk to the experienced people on your dropzone before you take things to the next level, ask questions, get advice. Nobody will fault you for taking the educated conservative route. Good Luck! Fly Safe!!!
crewkeith 0 #5 April 14, 2005 lots and lots of canopy time. hop and pops, high pulls lots of coaching. you close to colorado??? we got us a canopy school here. ask swoopster33 for dates of classes. pick peoples brains and watch people land it helps. if you got people hanging out give them a video camera and have them film you. that helps too. master the normal speed stuff then the slow speed stuff then go faster .The skies are no longer safe I'm back
tmoran 0 #6 April 15, 2005 Thanks everyone. I will be practicing high and seeking advice from those who swoop at my home DZ (Skydive Houston). Thanks for the ideas and perspectives to practice. As soon as I can get back to it (knee surgery), I will get to work high, slowly, and safely.
