Cutaway cables

Recommended Posts

I've got some of that Ace Pure Silicon Lubricant that was recommended a while ago. I haven't used it on my cables yet, but I have sprayed it on a few other things around my place. It doesn't seem to lubricate very well. I was expecting it would act more like an oil lubricant that would keep its slick feel, but this stuff seems to dry and not actually lubricate anything. Ya'll sure this stuff is good stuff to use on the cutaway cables?

Ooookkkkk....

I want in on konw how. How do I clean my cutaway housings and/or cables? Every 30 days? Seems like a lot. Now I move my rings around and flex the fabric but do you cut away the main to do it?

Love my sport. LOVE my rig. Want to keep healthy. Please educate. Anything else...?

I usually just pull the yellow cable out, remove one riser, flex, reinstall, repeat other side. Do a canopy check after you do it if there is any doubt about it getting twisted in the process.

>How often do you clean cutaway cables on your rig?

Whenever I cut away my canopy, usually every 30-60 days. I wipe them down when I do that. During repacks I use silicone as well. I use the silicone gel that comes with the cypres rigger's kit; put a bit on a piece of felt, pull the cable through the felt, then use a clean paper towel to wipe all the visible silicone off the cables. When you're done the cables should feel slippery, but you shouldn't be able to feel any of the silicone on the cables themselves.

My rigger told me that he cleans the cables every time he does reserve repack. He says it is fine to do it every several month and I do not have any reasons not to trust him. Thanks for the advises anyway, it is always nice to know the other people’s opinions about safety and gear maintaince.

... Ace Pure Silicone Lubricant has been by far the best. Very slick and the cutaway cables don't get as dirty in the 30 days between cleanings.

I went to an Ace hardware store but was unable to find this. Is it a spray? Does it come in a tube? in a stick?

I ended up getting something called Multi-purpose Siliconce Lubricant by a company called "panef." It came in a 2 oz. tube. I smeared it over my cutaway cables and wiped them down completely with a paper towel. There were no nicks or cuts in the cables. I guess the idea is just to make sure they come out of the cable housings (preferably hard housings) in a smooth unobstructed fashion?

I also played with the three ring system, moved them around, and just wiped them with a dry paper towel.

Am I missing anything?

It comes in a normal spray-paint can. Black label, white cap. It is $4.99/can and the Ace # is: 12293. I checked their web page and couldn't find so I called a local Ace Hardware store and they had 5 cans in stock.

That will probably work fine. Check and see if it attracts dirt to your cables.

I also could not find 'exactly' the Ace brand...

My Ace hardware was a True Value hardware a few months ago, so that could be it (Snap Brand spray silicone).

Thanks for posting the product #.

The stuff I have doesn't seem to be oily, so it is probably OK, it certainly was easy to cut away last month:|.
