Jumpmunki 0 #1 November 30, 2004 does it even exist? where are the rounds held? where do the competitors jump? who are the top ten cutters in the uk by the UK swoop scene standards? i've heard of a couple of events around the uk, but i can't say i heard them hyped as much as the american events... where is the uk swoop scene in the big picture of things and where can people go to watch and take part and learn in our country? gus 1 #2 November 30, 2004 swooping.co.uk is a good place to start, although it doesn't look like it's been updated for a while. It's my impression that the UK swooping scene has been hampered by the BPA's (and dropzone's?) reluctance to get involved in sanctioning/organising what they perceive as a dangerous event. A couple of the guys involved (Brian Vacher, Chris Lynch, Gary Wainwright) are occasional posters on dz.com, maybe they'll chip in. Dazzle 0 #3 November 30, 2004 There was a planned canopy piloting nationals but from the look of the competitions committee minutes that might or might not happen.
SkymonkeyONE 4 #4 November 30, 2004 How then, exactly, do you guys choose who will go to the world meet? Send who can afford the trip?
meatbomb 0 #5 November 30, 2004 As far as I'm aware, we've never sent anyone! From the BPA Competitions Committee minutes: Quote63/04 Canopy Piloting 63.1 Postponement of the Second World Cup in Canopy Piloting Brian Vacher reported that the Second World Cup in Canopy Piloting, which had been due to take place at the Florida Skydiving Centre at the end of October 2004, had had to be postponed consequent on the after-effects of the disruption caused by recent hurricanes. The new dates had been announced as 7-12 February 2005. There would be two classes, Advanced and Pro. To date, there provisional UK team selection would be from among 7 in the Pro category and 2 in Advanced. The Committee appointed Brian Vacher as UK Team Captain and authorised him to select the team. The Chairman asked Brian Vacher to keep in mind the rule that any competitor who had represented another nation within the last three would not be eligible to represent the UK, even if s/he met other eligibility criteria. The UK delegation would be entirely self-funded. 63.2 Canopy Piloting Nationals 2005 Brian Vacher said that he was reluctant to do any further work on the planned Canopy Piloting Nationals 2005 until a firm timetable was in place to introduce the new canopy handling CH1-4 system. He was concerned that the roll-out of the new canopy handling system might be a rate-limiting factor in holding the Canopy Piloting Nationals. What if the roll-out were to be delayed for some reason? Where would that leave the CP Nationals? Andy Scott said that the BPA Chairman had cited the CP Nationals as an integral part of the roll-out programme at CH4 level. Brian Vacher said there was an urgent need for a clear steer from the Canopy Handling Panel/STC on how CH4 would affect next year’s CP Nationals. He said he was becoming frustrated about what appeared to be a lack of information, and fearful that this might lead to requests for further deferral of the inaugural CP Nationals. The Chairman said it was important to explain to the Council that this Committee had now reached the point in its programme where detailed planning for next year’s Nationals had to take place. If there were any remaining issues surrounding the grant of full authority from the Council for this Committee to organise CP Nationals in 2005, these now had to be identified and worked through. Action: Clarify with the Council The problem is, the BPA don't currently recognise swooping as a discipline...However there are moves afoot to regulate it up to the hilt. The current plan (as I understand it) is to have Canopy Handling (CH) ratings: CH1 - Basic Canopy Control - First Jump Course CH2 - Further Canopy Control - Pre-requisite for 'A' Licence CH3 - Advanced Canopy Control - Pre-requisite for another licence and/or Swooping. CH4 - Swooping - Pre-requisite for Swooping Competitions and Coaching CH3. Once this in place, probably in April time ish, CH4s will be able to compete...--- Swoopert, CS-Aiiiiiii! garywainwright 0 #6 November 30, 2004 Something like that! The UK sent 5 competitors to Perris in the Pro class and we all qualified. In the UK this year we have only been able to complete 1 meet due to weather! We have quite a simple entry criteria. Swoop succesfully 3 times out of 6 down a 150 ft course with 10ft entry gates and you can compete. We have a red and yellow card system for trying to keep things safe. The meets are very friendly with typically about 5 - 10 people there. Chris Lynch organises the events. We do need BPA approval to go to the world cup and i think we have 7 guys in the Pro class and 2 in advanced. At least 4 of these guys live outside the UK. Progress is a little slow (the BPA woudn't let us have a nationals this year) but we're having fun! If anyone is interesting in competing in the UK next year i'll post the dates as soon as i know them.http://www.garywainwright.co.uk Instagram gary_wainwright_uk
