a patient one.
If you try to jam the toggles, you may/will pop up.
If you don't wait and bleed off speed after planing out... hope you like to run or slide.

DISCLAIMER: LOOK AT MY LOW NUMBER OF JUMPS BEFORE TAKING ANYTHING I SAY IN TO CONSIDERATION

I'm only approx. 40 or 50 jumps away from that switch between 190 and 170 so I still remember that feeling of the "whao, this canopy responds sweet"

anyway, OBVIOUSLY, test it out up high and you'll find...not a whole lot of difference in response, except that you no longer feel lik eyou're kind of comming down and guessing, your input=canopy input...I loved it :)

anywho, even and smooth...there really should be no "at once or staged" set in your mind, it's in what you feel in the response of the canopy. In my opinion, getting locked in to the "at once or staged" mentality could get you hurt as no one landing is the same.

Instead, do what you were hopefully doing w/ your 190. input judging by the canopy's output.

Popping up on a 170 really isn't all that bad, even w/ gaining speed from riser turns as long as you PLF, no biggie, but I will tell you that jamming down brakes on that canopy (as on most any other canopy) WILL Cause you to pop up, makes for great crowd entertainment ;)

A couple points:

First, don't think about flaring your canopy in different ways because of the wind conditions. Way too many people think they need to flare "harder" in no wind or down-wind situations - you don't.

Second, I HATE the "two-stage" flare concept that has been around around since the advent of ZP canopies (maybe longer) that some old timmers will not let go of, and continue to preach to up-and-comers.

Instead, think about it like this - flare smoothly, as much as you need to, when you need to, so you touch down with the minimum amount of vertical and forward speed. That's it. No stages.

Here's the analogy. When you are driving your car and see a red light, do you instantly slam on the breaks? (even in no wind :P)? Do you press the break peddle down half way and hold it for two seconds and then slam it down the rest of the way? No. You take your foot off the gas, and then slowly get on the break applying more and more pressure in a nice smooth manner until you have come to a complete stop at the intersection. If you at any time realize you are going to go through the intersection, you apply more break. If you think you are going to come up short, you ease up a little.

Make sense? Enjoy the new canopy. Sabre 2's have loads of flare - you will love it.
