PD Removable Deployment System (R.D.S.)

(ii) I haven't time to read up about it all (and my brains a bit fried from work) but, how would this affect a horse shoe mal (if at all)?

Interesting, I wonder if there is a chance the canopy could come out of the 'free' bag and deploy 'cleanly'?

Bags, PCs and sliders are quite small on sub-100 sq. ft. canopies so not that big? Still, this isn't intended for regular jumpers deploying at 2,500, but for those who deploy higher and need every ounce of performance out of the canopy. Worth the effort of stuffing.

I saw something like this when I was down at aggieland over the summer. I forget the guys name - Freaksisters ex. Very cool setup. I wondered at the time how smart the setup was, but if PD's selling it, I guess it's been through a lot of testing.

Perry is his name, he's from SD Dallas. His design is very very similar to PD's design. Honestly, I don't see where this would matter, yet. Personally I don't think that canopy design is high performance enough yet to merit this, although it is very interesting. Right now the record swoop is over 400ft and that was done without a detatchable d-bag/pc.

Typical propack, the line (TJ and Nate are using simple vectran line making a triangle with the 2 trailing corners of the slider) is laid across the top seem now, ie running along the tail right to the Dbag, Do your 2 folds (at sub 120, should only need 2 Sfolds max, specially on the cross braced stuff) then stuff it in the bag. When the canopy is out of the bag the lanyard extends (extra length was stored in the bottom of Dbag) behind the tail, and comes down with the slider.

That part of the process is very tested, and seems to be very reliable. The harder part of the design is the grommet/ring setup on the slider. TJ described it to me on the plane but I was not able to fully visualize it in my head. He said he was not using one because of the numerous problematic deployments he has seen with the system and I believe he said 2 cutaways from Jay at the last meet 2 weekends ago. He does however jump with the removable Dbag on every jump. It does not seem to add more than a couple of seconds to his pack jobs.

Have you seen the sliders on a Xaos or Velocity, they are huge in comparison to larger elliptical canopies. My slider on my Velocity is 21x30, with the original being 23x30 inches. I know the slider on my Nitron was significantly smaller than that.

I've seen one of those. On Andy Farrington's Xaos-27. I believe he made one himself. Then Andy's a master rigger too. I never quite got it when I saw the setup, even after much 'splainin'.:$

Dunno why or how something like that could improve the performance of his ride if you've ever seen him. He's one heck of a Talent Royale so let's leave it at that.B|

My other ride is the relative wind.

and he could not suck it down a few seconds, he needed a lot of time to get his slider and d-bag/bridle removed and stowed.

Ramon is right. Jay took a LOT of time to get this contraption reeled in, then removed and stuffed in his shirt or behind his back. This creates problems when a person should be sucking it down and getting out of the way due to their higher wingload. When that person does not take it down, the people behind him get hosed and have to compromise their turns in some occasions.

Short swoop comp lesson: In competition, we normally get out in groups of four, the highest wingloaded person out first and burning it down in order to "set up the stack." Contestants swoop in this pre-declared order and landing out of order will get you a zero for the round. It's no big deal if you follow the rules and respect your pass-mates. When someone ahead of you dumps right out the door, then hangs in brakes, he creates problems for those behind him. This is exacerbated when the plane continues to make climbing passes because there are "fun jumpers" on board going all the way up. If someone gets out last on a pass from 6,500 feet, dumps right out the door, then dicks around with his gear and then hangs in brakes, then the first guy out on the next pass is likely to skydive right past him on the way to his pre-planned 4000 foot opening. I hope this makes sense. Rejumps are granted in cases where two competitors get too stacked up near "turn" altitude. Both T.J. Landgren and myself got re-jumps at the spring ASC/Team Method swoop meet when the guy in front of T.J. sat up in brakes too long then promptly chowed heavily, right in front of us in the middle of the course. The first guy hosed both himself and both of us by not following competition protocol. We had to pay for our re-jumps even though it was not our fault.
-end of lesson

The D-bag/pilot chute is attached to the slider with an RSL quick release and can be attached to a non-removable slider just as easily. The removable slider is sexy, but I seriously doubt I will go to that as it seems sketchy and I have seen, first hand, the problems it causes. This is not something that a beer-line swooper needs to be putting on his rig. The full removable slider/d-bag combo is a complete pain in the ass. The first removable slider I saw was at the 2001 PSN on Sonic's rig. He played hell getting the slider down the lines and chopped it several times in development.
