spidermonky 0 #1 November 13, 2002 If you experienced a line over on your main and you were carrying a hook knife; would you cut the line (and test for controllability) or chop the canopy? Which of these options is better for the equipment? What about your personal safety? Thanks
PhreeZone 20 #2 November 13, 2002 Chop... odds are that you will be spinning and out of control... no need to waste time on getting the knife, then trying to find the right line the cutting it.... Chop it.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
TB99 0 #3 November 13, 2002 I agree with the above .. chop. Unless you're super experienced and have had a number of lineovers or something to that degree, chop and don't waste valuable time. What's the cost to fix a cut line anyways? Would it be about the same to get a reserve repack anyways??? Trailer 11/12 was the best. Thanks for the memories ... you guys rocked! weid14 0 #4 November 13, 2002 I have experience under a highly loaded, zippy canopy, spinning mal... trust me when I say you would not have time, nor vision, nor strength to locate the offending line, get the knife and give it a cut. of course, then, you'd be dealing with a fairly unstable canopy (depending on design I suppose), that would require chopping anyway. basically, my MO is -- open canopy, is it ok?, if not chop it, there is no need to waste time. I figure my altitude loss was about 600 feet bewteen having an open spinning canopy till a good reserve. it wasn't a long drawn out event. ( I wouldn't mind viewing that one on the jump track software)
JamesNahikian 0 #5 November 13, 2002 Personal decision tree: if my main canopy isn't landable then I chop it. A problem with the reserve? That's another thread. My approach has worked since 1994 and I'm sticking to it. D. James Nahikian CHICAGO

weid14 0 #8 November 13, 2002 can't you change the resolution to get closer to one part of the dive? I was wondering what it recoreded as my vertical speed, it read teh deployment at 1700, I know I pitched right around 2500.
Sonic 0 #9 November 13, 2002 It only records what height you had a canopy, not pitching alti. At least you can log a few extra seconds of freefall ----------------------------------- It's like something out of that twilighty show about that zone
JamesNahikian 0 #10 November 13, 2002 I'm big-boned for sure. Happen to use a discarded weather balloon for my reserve pilot chute. Hasn't been an issue thus far, though the image-consciousness thing may move me to acquire a personal tandem rig -- to be sleek-like. D. weid14 0 #11 November 13, 2002 I know that, I was wondering what the speed graph would show from abotu 2500 feet till 1700 feet.
