Wednesday canopy theroy

Recommended Posts

Ever notice how some people bitch about certain canopies and some think they are the greatest. It happens with ALL canopies. Yes, you will find a person complain that their Spectre opens like dogshit.

Same for cars, same for parachutes

If a person is cuttin and assembling a canopy on Monday they are busy thinking about their past weekend. This is the second worst day a canopy can be built, the workers are trying to get back in the routine of things. Mind is out there.

Tuesday and thursday are second best. They are in the upswing or slight downswing of the week, their mind is on the game. Probably get whats advertized, but relining will be a must.

Wednesday canopies are the best. Prime shit man. Built to perfection, and probably can go well past their relines. They probably will survive the test of time.

Friday canopies...u fucked. These could be the best chutes in the world but unfortunately all the worker bees are thinking of the weekend and probably sewing their fingers to clothes at this point. If you bought a shitty canopy, IT'S A FRIDAY CANOPY!!!

Then again, some parachutes just suck ass!

Eitherway, if a company has good quality control, then the mistakes should be found. If they do slip by, then if the company has good customer service, they should go out of their way to fix the problem, even if that means a new canopy is built.

I've seen it before, let me use an example: PD. The most recent example I can think of is on a Velocity 103 a friend bought. He had a demo for a while, it flew well, he liked it, he bought a stock Velo 103 off the shelf direct from the company. The new canopy didn't fly the same, it opened horribly and just wasn't right. Basically, it slipped through the cracks at quality control. Structurely it was sound, it just didn't fly right or open right. He contacted PD, tried some suggestions, when those didn't work, he was requested to send the canopy back, which he did. They gave him a demo to jump in the mean time. After a bit over a week, PD called and said "yes, something is wrong, we can't figure it out though, so we're building you a new one. Would you like to use these colors or pick some new colors." They built it for him with a new color pattern (instead of the stock pattern) and got it back to him fairly quickly. The replacement canopy flies like it should and opens like it should and the customer is very happy, end of story.

Unfortunately, we've all heard stories of companies blaming everything but the canopy for opening problems, flying problems, etc. Funny how when that happens, people are upset and they let other people know about it, thus, the canopy company has to work very hard to get new customers and work very hard to fix its name in the jumping public.

Well, atleast that's what I've seen in nearly 4 years of jumping.:)

I'm still amazed at how exacting the tolerances of production have to be on todays HP canopies. I mean I get dizzy just looking at the stitching of xbraces and cant imagine how much skill and mental toughness it must take to reproduce these canopies again and again. We are studying quality control methods in on of my MBA classes, and it really makes me appreciate the effort that all the canopy manufactures put in to keeping us safe up there.
