teaching an old dog a new trick

Recommended Posts

what's up.

so i'm wanting to teach my dad this summer how to do hook turns, and swoop properly. right now he does these nasty little 90's or less with toggles, and i just can't seam to get it into his head to use risers. but this summer he said he may actually let me try to teach him.

i know it's going to take a lot of work, anyone have any suggestions how to get it through my dad's thick head to do hook turns right?

i'm going to start him slow, considering he is old :P, and can't take a pounding anymore. but one day, by the end or this summer, i want to be able to go through on my buddy's crossfire and do a team landing with my dad, and get some good pics of it, now how fuckin cool would that be.

thanks

I'll bet your Dad will learn quickly. All he has to do is decide that it's ok to do something new. With out change, learning stops.

I had 500 jumps and knew the concept of swooping. The DZO had 5000 jumps on a falcon. He bought a Stiletto. I could swoop "OK" but nothing special. However, He was outside his element.

I simply asked him in a pleading sort of way, to begin using front risers. He was such a good canopy pilot that he thought it was fine to snap a toggle turn. It nearly bit him badly. As we rode in the van back to the airport, he said "Tim... I believe you now. It's time to change"

I have him some excersizes to wring the canopy out up at altitude. I had him just Crank on the front risers and do lots of turns and stuff. After getting used to trying to screw the parachute up with the fronts, he started to use input for his landings. He started with simple double fronts then gradually added a turn into it and ended in double fronts. It wasn't long and he could carve a landing.

Old dogs learn fast, as soon as they decide to. Your Dad can see your skill and I suspect he's proud of you. He'll pay attention with out a doubt.

Just go for it.

Good luck... and yes.. that would be very cool!

Yeah and if that does work, you can always take "ol yeller" out back and shoot him :)

well, off do go find something to do.

It's as simple as this, every time you jump something new or different, practice what you want to do up high. For landings work it down (to ground level) gradually.

Practice, practice, practice.

Everytime you jump something new you should be wringing it out before you get close to the ground and then landing conservitely until you get to know the new animal you're flying.
