Best Wing Loading for a Velocity

Recommended Posts

I currently jump a velocity and love it. But since I bought it I have put on weight. [:/]I jump an 84 with an exit weight of 205. It still flies fine, but I have to get deep into the toggles just for canopy to fully level out and the surfs are too short. So for distance, what is the best loading? Does anyone know what the record holder's wing loading was? I may be trading this to up size if anyone is looking to downsize. (I'll post that in the classifieds when I find out what size is right for me)
Any input is appreciated...

OK a couple of things.
I've just looked at you profile and it says you only have 750 jumps, thats a concern because of you high wing loading and also your number of jumps.
You are currently wing loading at 2.44.
I jump a velocity 84 loaded at 2.3.
The professional swoopers are all wing loading at 2.2-2.3.
Also saying that you are deep in toggles to plane it out quite alot says to me that you are consistanly turning low.
Even a highly loaded crossbraced canopy can be landed on rears or with very little toggle input. i've loaded up to 3.3 and landed on rears.
I'm very concerned about someone with your experience jumping this canopy.
Who sold it to you, did they ask about your previous canopy experience, weight, and number of jumps, because as a dealer I would never had sold you a canopy that small let alone a velocity or anything crossbrassed.
I would seriously think about selling it and buying a stilleto or something around that performance range.
Be VERY VERY VERY careful, that you don't hurt or kill yourself.
These canopies are very unforgiving.

Point taken on updating my profile. I currently have over 900 jumps, and bought the velocity at 2.0:1 wing loading after making several hundred jumps on a Sam105 at 1.8:1 (before that a safire at 1.7:1) The dealer knows me well, and is not concerned, nor should he be. The reason I am deep in brakes is not digging out of a low turn, it just takes more surface area of flare when loaded higher.
Now back to my original question, I am looking to upsize, and I'm looking to find out the appropriate size for distance. I have heard the blanket 2.0:1 but was looking for input from people with experience on this canopy.

OK man my bad glad to hear you have a few more jumps and that you progressed from something fairly small.
I Still don't think that you should be using so much toogle input to plane the canopy out. try hooking a little higher.
Only ways i'd guess 2.1-2.2 that would put you under velo 96, if you buy another velo.
Personally there my favourite of the crossbraced canopies.

i've heard people loading them from 1.8 to 2.3. i jumped them from a 79 (2.6) up to a 96 (2.1). and i liked the 96 the best, it seamed to get the longest swoop. and the 79 flew ok, but not very well. they just don't seam to handle heavey wing loadings as well as the vx's. i've jumped those down to 69, and it still had a decent swoop actually, just not enough flart to stop, i had to run.

maybe chuck will get in on this thread since he jumps a velo at competition level.

I believe that the 'sweet spot' for a Velocity is around 2.1 to 2.3 to get the best all-around performance. If distance is what you want, then I think people are jumping slightly larger wings. I have a 103 that I am loading at about 2.0 and it is great, but I am looking to sell it and get a 96 so that I can be in that 2.2 range.

I do believe that if you are getting deep in toggles, that something in your technique is off. The characteristics you are describing shouldn't be true for a Velocity loaded at 2.4.

Good afternoon,

I have spoken with some people who work for CPS and they were saying the PD factory team liked the velocity 96 loaded at 210lbs for the longest distance on their swoops. I'm debating between the 103 or the 96 for a camera canopy. I have seen some pretty amazing openings from the video of deland Majik's 4 way video dude, and I have heard some other people rave about their openings. I'm still going to keep the VX for my AFF canopy though. i really like the way it flies after it opens.

Also stay tuned for a post on eloy's swoop club. I did it and really enjoyed it. That's all I have to say about that.!!!

I haven't been jumping my Velocity 96 for too long, but my impression is that you want to be somewhere in the 2 to 2.2 range for optimal distance. I'm at 2.1 and it seems just about perfect.

As for the openings, they're not in the same category as my old Crossfire, but still completely acceptable for my Flat Top Pro 2 camera set-up. I would guess about 600 feet from pilot chute to canopy, where my Crossfire was more in the 800 to 1000 ft range.

Thanks everyone for replying! It seems the feeling is between 2.1 and 2.2ish. That's what I was going for. Back when I got it, it seemed like PD was still saying stay at 2:1. Back when I loaded this canopy at 2:1 it was still fairly new to me and I wasn't as aggressive as I am now so I couldn't judge what loading was giving my best distance. Just wanted a little more input before I blow another tax refund on one of these things. Thanks!

In gerneral, I think the best range is between 2.0 and 2.3... I jump a 103 and a 96... when I got them I was about 2.1 on the 103 and 2.25 on the 96... I've put on a little weight since then so I'm loading them a little higher, and don't jump the 96 much...

with 900 jumps, and not know how you fly, closer to 2.0 is a better starting place than 2.44
