grega 0 #1 November 21, 2003 i wasn't able to shut down the canopy or you can shut it down I read that many times here in different threads and was never sure what "shut down" means? Does that mean stalling the canopy, or slowing it down to almost zero vertical and horizontal speed? or is it something completely different?"George just lucky i guess!" sammer 0 #2 November 21, 2003 I am certainly not the authority on these things, but I always considered "shutting down the canopy" to mean slowing it down (horizontally) to where you are not running your ass off when your feet hit the ground.
andy2 0 #3 November 21, 2003 I thought it meant trading your foward speed for positive lift so by calculating a shorter swoop, you are able to hit a target for accuracy that you would of otherwise swooped past. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm... davelepka 4 #4 November 21, 2003 It's usually referring to slowing the canopy to a reasonable speed at the end of a swoop. For example 'I did a downwinder in a 15 mph wind. The swoop was super fast, and I went 350 feet, but because of the tailwind, I was unable to SHUT THE CANOPY DOWN. I fell down, and tumbled to a stop' (NOT a true story, by the way). Pro swoopers may use the term in talking about accuracy, where they will stall the canopy to keep from overshooting the target. This is a dangerous and advanced technique which only the top pros are using (using properly, that is, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there screwing it up). I would guess that most times, the phrase is being used as in the first example.
jumperconway 0 #5 November 21, 2003 Bleeding off the forward speed before running out of lift on landing, typically after a swoop.
diveout 0 #6 November 21, 2003 To me, the canopy shutting down is when it runs out of lift. If you do a good job of shutting down the canopy, you don't have to run it out too much or slide it in. If you carve really hard or stab the brakes to pop up and hit a target, your canopy quickly runs out of lift and shuts down. The term has sort of come to mean getting the most low speed or last bit of flare out of your parachute, touching down as softly as possible.

More examples by yourself and Andy where neither of you really need to be posting answers in this forum. Not that I don't like you, Andy, but this is not the forum to be posting answers at your experience level. Please don't post "answers" in this or any other specified forum if you are not qualified to do so, no matter how right you think your answers are. This, specifically, is one of the forums where guys like you can ask questions and listen to the truly educated answers. Don't get aggravated if someone with those qualifications doesn't answer right away; it's not a race. Peace, chuck

mollusc 0 #9 November 24, 2003 This, specifically, is one of the forums where guys like you can ask questions and listen to the truly educated answers.*** You never know where the next good idea comes from. Sometimes the best answers come from people with little or no time in the field at all. People with a different angle of attack. Keep your minds open. As for those that already are educated, I guess you are able to separate good from bad answers. As for us being a little less educated, always be critical to what you read here. Even experts do not agree sometimes. We just have to listen to all of it and finally trust ourselves to make sound decisions based on all information accessible. This was not meant for this thread alone, but the fora in general.
grega 0 #10 November 24, 2003 So to sum it up. Shutting down the canopy means slowing it down to the speed where you can "calmly" step on the ground."George just lucky i guess!"
