Bigwallmaster 0 #1 October 13, 2003 I'm fairly new to skydiving (I have around 200 jumps). I came into this sport with a strong interest in BASE, but if the truth is to be spoken, I now have an even stronger interest in learning to swoop. The problem is that short of taking an advanced canopy piloting course, I don't know the first place to begin learning the in's and out's of swooping. I weigh about 200 lbs. out the door, and I fly a Sabre 2 170. At this point I have no desire to really downsize, as I feel that I have much more to learn and experiment with, on the canopy I am currently flying. I would really appreciate any stories, advice, or info. anyone could offer. It would be nice to hear some stories about how some of you really good swoopers got started. Also, could some explain their methodology of initiating a 180 or 270 hook turn. thanks, J.P.
ianmdrennan 2 #2 October 13, 2003 Hi, I think a lot of us got started by trial and error and learning from one another. Cool thing is nowdays someone like yourself can take a class by some very very qualified swoopers out there. I'd seriously suggest starting there. They offer courses for all levels at a pretty cheap cost and they'll give you a great foundation to build off of. rgoper 0 #3 October 14, 2003 i'm in total agreement with Ian here. although he has way more jumps and way more experience than i. take an advanced canopy course, which are getting easier and easier to find, or find a mentor, someone who is already an accomplished skydiver and swooper. someday someone is going to create a computer simulator program for swooping like for flying an airplane, that way you can bust that ass and not get hurt. --Richard-- "We Will Not Be Shaken By Thugs, And Terroist"

weegegirl 2 #5 October 15, 2003 Still VERY new to the sport myself (350 jumps) - and far from calling myself a "swooper." But as far as canopy control/flight, Big Air Sportz's Brian Germain has a fantastic class that he can gear towards any level.
Auryn 0 #6 October 17, 2003 Quote, or find a mentor, someone who is already an accomplished skydiver and swooper. I cannot agree with this more.. the mentor thing is better than anything else.. get someone that will watch you land and give you feedback, good and bad. that is a great tool.
