Swoop with a spectre, good or bad?

Recommended Posts

I am learning how to swoop with a spectre 150 loaded at 1.25:1 but I was told one time that it wasn't recommended to try and swoop with a spectre, so my question is: Is it safe or not safe to swoop with spectres? and why?

Right now I am doing 180° front riser hook.

Just in case for the jump number flamers: before flaming me because of my jump numbers, come and see my skills under canopy and then flame all you want.

flame flame, I have the double of jumps, so I am MUCH more experimented than you :P

I think it's ok to swoop a spectre, many friends do it, some at www.babylon-freefly do it, bruno http://www.exoticskyadventures.nl/staff/brokken.htm brokken does it...
it's not the longest swoop you will get in your life, bbut it can already be very cool ;) just take care not to hit the ground. It's maybe more physical to front riser turn it, as the canopy is rock solid, anchored in the air, but there are techniques to help

Yeah am been careful with that, right now am still learning how my canopy works with the 180's, doing the hook at kinda high altitude (from 300fts to 500fts) in no wind days (in winter thats all the wind we get, and its a 8-9 month winter, is it good or bad?) some times to compensate I do a double front after the hook to get a bit more speed, it bleeds off to fast after the hook but since am still learning its ok with me.

Dunno if its because am getting used to it or because its a good canopy but the front riser pressure is kinda acceptable. I tried doing a front riser with a sabre 170 and to tell you the truth it was impossible! then tried it with a sabre2 170 and it was kinda hard. (maybe I gotta do more exercise and stop been such a "couch dz.com potato" :D)

I learned some cool techniques in a canopy control seminar with Scott Miller, something about not trying to pull the riser but try to climb the riser.

You are very right, everybody should take it, it was a very good course, it was part of skydiveU The Search training program.

After that course I started my swoop progression, only bad thing is that its kinda hard to get info without getting flamed for asking something; so I made my own course progression, started at 3000fts trying all kinds of turns then flaring, looking at altimeter everytime I did something etc.; after that I took it a bit lower, and lower and lower until now that I am at 300-500, only thing am waiting for before going lower is for my eye and brain to train itself on the altitudes vs speed, recovery arc of the canopy, leveling the wing, input of flare etc.

My instructor has been very helpful giving me tips, hints and some lessons about dynamics (how a wing works with more speed vs lower speeds etc.), the only thing he does that I don't like doing is that he likes to hook with toggles, I prefer using the risers gives me a more comfy feeling.

Good skills! From what you described in your posts your more or less taking the same route towards swooping as i did and still am.
I quite agree that the use of front risers as opposed to toggles is a better not to mention safer technique for swooping.
But please[not suggesting you arn't]be aware of other canopies and what the're doing at all times.i.e.Land alone.

Hello my friend

it IS absolutely COOL to swoop spectres. I am very positive in that spetre is some of the greatest canopies ever designed. Not only because of it's performance/reliability ratio - it is also a good teacher. Recently I switched from my spectre170 to (a moderately transparent) stiletto 150 (about 1.5 lbs/sqft) and i must say - spectre is a good teacher if you want to hone your swoop & flare skills. 9-cells are much easier to handle after this.

I shall fly smaller ellipticals but I'll keep my old spectre because I love it. :$
