Casch 0 #1 November 3, 2002 I'm not a real big fan of my DZ's Pro-tec helmets, and I was thinking about asking them if I could wear my snowboard helmet. It's not much different in shape, but it's more comfortable, fits better and is probably a lot stronger. It does have one of those goggle keeper tabs on the back but I will take that off since it is a possible snag point. What do you think?
dterrick 0 #2 November 3, 2002 I wear a Carrera snowboard hat that I bought for winter mountain biking. Works great! You get hat-head no matter what you wear to jump so you may as well have more protection / style. If you have the helmet style with solid ear coverings you may also find room for a dytter as a bonus! Scoby 0 #3 November 3, 2002 I'm tempted to do it, though my snowboarding helmet looks far less cool with skydiving goggles than ski goggles. I'm thinking of finding ones that does double duty, and foisting this one off on someone else. Basically, with skydiving helmets, you seem to have the choice of protection and no style (Protec), no style or protection (Gath), or style and little protection (everything else). The only problem, I think, would be mounting an audible.
PhreeZone 20 #4 November 3, 2002 Just remember... no snag hazards, so your goggle strap gets cut off, etc.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
wmw999 2,587 #5 November 3, 2002 There was a really excellent thread on helmets a couple of months ago: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=209180#209180 Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
Casch 0 #6 November 4, 2002 Thank you, good info in that thread. Here is my helmet. I was wrong...I think Bole makes sunglasses (o garfas de sol) The helmet is made by boeri. I think it was about $40 at Big 5 or something. It is actually a pretty good helmet for the money. I got it when I first started snowboarding and on my 1st run on a real slope (no more tow rope for me!) I was going straight down on a steep slope and caught an edge and when sliding head first right into a solid chunk of ice...my neck hurt but my head was aight! I will be cutting off the goggle strap before I jump it don't worry.
Cornholio 0 #7 November 4, 2002 Ok, that is not a Bole helmet, it is a Boeri. I know, cause I have one just like it and use it for skydiving. It fits well, offers great protection, and is warm in the winter time. It also is not bad in the summer. I left my goggle strap on the back as I do plan to use it during the winter months when I snowboard. The only problem I had with it was mounting a ProTrack inside. I had to cut out a little of the foam protection and it fits pretty good with it in there. I can feel it against my ear, but it is far from uncomfortable. If it fits you and is comfortable, I would say go for it and use it. The goggle strap might be an issue for some, but a couple local riggers told me it should not pose a problem. Plus, I have received numerous compliments on it, since you don't see too many of them around the dz. Plus, the snowboarders know what it is when they see it. Butthead: Whoa! Burritos for breakfast! Beavis: Yeah! Yeah! Cool! bellyflier on the dz.com hybrid record jump
Casch 0 #8 November 4, 2002 I took a look at the helmet after the post and saw that is wasn't bole hehe...anyways, yeah I suppose I wouldn't have to cut it off, I could just tape it. But the riggers are probably right, it probably wouldn't cause much of a problem even if it snagged cause it's such weak material.
mccordia 74 #9 November 4, 2002 I bought a cheep helmet just a few days ago. jumped with it yesterday, and it's great... Also a snowboard/skate helmet. Nice leather ear-protection (warm and sound-arm too..less noise from the plane/freefall..) and it looks sorta cool (right?) And it was realy cheep too..:) http://www.3dluvr.com/mccordia/fridge/pictures/skydive/mccordia_newhelmet.jpg http://www.3dluvr.com/mccordia/fridge/pictures/skydive/mccordia_rig_01.jpgJC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete? riggerrob 643 #10 November 4, 2002 Several of our local jumpers wear ski/snowboard helmets made by Boeri/Bieffe/Bole. etc. with great results. They look way cooler than Pro-Tecs and provide better protection than Gath helmets.
Casch 0 #11 November 4, 2002 Right on guys, thanks for the input
wlie 0 #12 November 4, 2002 I think it should be just fine. I was wearing one made by Giro when I started. The only thing to watch for is the snap secured loop on the back of the helmet that's meant to keep your googles in place. It's a snag potential, so keep your head down as you look over your shoulders to check your canopy on opening. My other ride is the relative wind. mujie96 0 #13 November 4, 2002 I'm using a half shell type snowboard helmet. I just spent more money on a used Aviator for freeflying because the first time I got my sit stable the snowboard helmet caught so much air around the edges that the chinstrap bruised my jaw. Oh well, live and learn. As a sidenote, (for ME anyway) the Protec works ok for sitting and yours looks like its shaped more like one of those than mine so it probably won't cause the discomfort I had. Just keep swimming...just keep swimming....
