Stiletto Slug

Recommended Posts

I demoed a Stiletto and was not impressed at all.It was a 120 i was loading it at 1.7 and it was bit slow, and at top it was snappy in the lower end it sucked,It like if it run out of balls at the end,Doing 270 hooks in the sweet spot, looked like it was going to swoop but ran out at the end ,so i did it again to see if i was pulling on the brake, nope did it again?? So i put a few more and it bored me,I have a 149 Crossfire that has power to spare! hope the Cobalt they send me is not as boring as this stiletto,Has anyone ran into this?????[:/]

Lots of bottom end on that Cobalt.

When I had a demo a while back I had to make a fairly concious effort to keep my feet off the ground, I flew that thing to almost dead stop after I got the hang of it.

Generally speaking, the demo Stilettos from PD have the brake lines set much too short, this tends to hurt performance and kills a lot of the speed that you would have gotten from a good front riser turn. This is due to the tail being deflected when you go to your front riser(s).

It depends quite a bit on the person, too. I've seen some absolutely sick swoops done on Stilettos and seriously crappy swoops done on Colbalts and Crossfires. Same for the otherway around too.:P

Funny you should say that. I can get over a foot ball field length swoop out of My stiletto.

The Cobalt (comp model any way) does have more lift at the end though. I like em both but prefer landing a heavily loaded cobalt competition. The openings (on that particular parachute I haven't tried different one yet) were fairly brutal which is why I still have my stiletto.

Have fun.

just to make sure, your saying that you can get over 300 foot swoop on your stiletto?? i do admit, i have scene some good swoops on stilettos, but that seams a bit steep. i'm hoping you are exagurating a bit here.:)

I jump a velocity 96 and a stilletto 107, and I get great swoops out of my stilletto. I can also do a little different stuff with my stilletto, like land it in the peas almost every time. Not saying that the Velocity is bad but I sometimes get a sick swoop (sick being good) out of the ve while the stilletto is more predictable. Any canopy that you jump will take a while to dail in so its hard to determine how good a canopy is with a few jumps. I put 2 jumps on a small cobalt and my teammate put 60 on the same canopy and loved it.

perhaps it's not wise to post right after powering down a double (probably a triple) mocha.

If you have some bandwidth look at the video at the upper left under "The build". That's a video of a fairly tame swoop due to the masses of people that were there.

Burning Sky <== cool video located there.

The canopy is a 97 stiletto with about 3000 jumps on it. I weighed about 155 plus equipment.

I can get much more distance than that and even more on a different' parachute. But Still that stiletto swoops quite well.

Enjoy

ya, it looks pretty cool. like a big demo jump kinda.

Only better because after landing, people come up and give you things like cookies and hugs and stuff. Gotta watch out for the baked goods though

I have to agree with Aggie on this. I jump a stilleto and it's no where near the way youdescribe. Good person to PM is Chuck(skymonkeyone) he has sick time under a stilleto and is a Cobalt sponsored swooper. As raw as it sounds, I think it was the pilot and not the canopy in your case. Give it some more jumps.

I have a Crossfire2,But was trying to compare a Stiletto to it,The Crossfire BLOWS it away by far!!!

i would have to say that, i'd hope it would blow it away. since the stiletto came out like 10 years ago.

and as for the stiletto i am really impressed that it is still being jumped by so many people. that really says something for PD, i mean, a design 10 years old, and still selling strong, that's pretty impressive.

but i would have to say, i don't think i would ever buy a stiletto now, just because i like other canopies better, but a couple of years ago, hell ya i would of had one.

Ive yet to jump the Crossfire2. I really want to fly it not only to see how much it's improved but to see how FAR it blows the stiletto away and why that statement was made. In my opinion the original crossfire sucked hard! I believe I have enough test jump experience to make that assesment, but really, what the heck do I know. It's not fair to compare a crossfire1 to any thing since it basically was a P.O.S. (I.M.N.S.H.O) It had some good characteristics but no way was I going to fly one.

New parachutes are cool. I have had the oppurtunity to jump Lots of parachutes. Stiletto's still rock. I like other parachutes better in some areas but not in others. That's another post all together.

This year I plan to jump several types of parachutes so when I decide to finally replace mine, (and I do plan to replace it and not with another stiletto) there will be enough information to make a wise purchase.

If it's all about how far I can swoop, I'd make one choice, but that will not be the only reason. LOTS pf parachutes Swoop like a mother fucker. Especially given a good pilot that can actually utilize it's potential.

Parachutes have come along ways but some manufacturers sacrifice certain flight characteristics in lieu of others. Sometime it's a painful sacrifice. I don't ever dismiss opinions on a wing but Certainly it needs to be backed up at least a little bit with an.. "I did this, and this happened" sort of thing. I can take those opinions in the air with me to understand why that opinion was given.

Yo Freeflyz, how does the Crossfire 2 blow away the stiletto? I believe you and everything but I'd like any input that you may have. I plan to demo one in in a month.

Bye for now

This is probably the best comment to be made during this thread. A canopy is a canopy, a pilot makes it fly. Different wings have different characteristics, that doesn't make one better than another...each pilot's own flight style DRASTICALLY effects performance on any given wing.

I have many hundreds of jumps on both Stilettos and Crossfires (original), both loaded at around 1.8-2.0. I like them both and I think they both kick ass. Each one does something good.

I could get more distance out of the Crossfire (which is what I was looking for), but the Stiletto had a much more rapid turn rate and I.M.O. was more fun to fly. This said, I stuck with the Crossfire (before changing over to the Xaos) because I was looking for distance across the ground...simple as that.
