wceviper 0 #1 January 8, 2003 Hello, I am still a student going through AFF with 8 jumps. I started AFF over again this year with plans on finishing it this time. The reason I am asking about canopy control is because I have 3k-4k of altitude to play in before I get ready to start my landing pattern around 1k-1.2k. So, here it goes! When I am under canopy and I just pull the left toggle down real far, I start a nice controlled counter-clockwise spiral. Is it possible and safe, to do a smooth transition from a counter-clockwise spiral to a clockwise spiral without ever leveling off with the canopy. I am only using toggles. I never really noticed if other jumpers did this. The thought came across during the week when I was thinking about my canopy ride. I am 160 out the door jumping a Navigator 260. Thanks for you time and advice! -JasonYou may push me around, but you cannot win! You may throw me down, but i'll rise again!
AggieDave 6 #2 January 8, 2003 Not really, and if you do it too violently (quickly) you'll induce line twists. Ok, well, maybe not under your current canopy, but it could still be done.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." I believe he was asking if it could be done smoothly without leveling out. I do it all the time. A couple of spirals in one direction, switch toggle positions and a couple of spirals in the other direction. Of course, I'm also jumping a Spectre 190 and from what I've been able to gather from others I probably wouldn't do it on a Stilletto 135 -- not below 2,000 anyways. quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
JeffGordon 0 #4 January 8, 2003 Well yes you can induce line twists with that wing loading on a square, F111 canopy. I tried the same thing with a student canopy and it scared the pi$$ out of me.
Zlew 0 #5 January 8, 2003 I do the same thing quade... but u have to remmber student gear has longer lines... harder to keep the tension on the lines to keep them from twisting. It can be done, but its a lot mroe easy to induce line twist on student gear than on pro gear just based on the lines. Make sure you"feel" the tension on the lines and feel the canopy turn as your budy turns, if your body gets behind your canopy....you will be in an unhappy place
hookitt 1 #6 January 9, 2003 Go for it. It's fun. I have my student's do it all the time. It's matter of not being extremely radical. Turn the heck out of that thing. Pay attention to the effects of turning it. Some questions will answer themselves. Have some fun. Some times when you wonder "What happens if I do this?" It's time to just try it. (disclaimer... be reasonable when you succomb to those urges) After you do what you asked about, try turning both directions with just your rear risers. Also do some practice flaring with just rear risers. Try turning with a front riser. Have some fun, just use your good judgement. Work up to it and pay attention to what happens during toggle or riser input. Have some fun just be reasonable. Since you have the mindset to ask questions already, I believe you'll do a good job learning to fly with each parachute flight... hookitt 1 #7 January 9, 2003 Quote from what I've been able to gather from others I probably wouldn't do it on a Stilletto 135 -- not below 2,000 anyways. I do that all the time too However if you get off that 190 and onto the 135 and then pull the toggle down as far as you would on the 190 (sorry for the run on).... THEN you're asking for it. A hard spiral on my stiletto is down to my ear or shoulder. I can't even bring my self to pull it down more than that. The reason people induce line twists so low to the ground while trying a super small parachute for the first time is because they blindly use the same amount of toggle input. Make sense? You however... are Paul Quade, so it's not an issue (I say that out of respect not of angst) C-yaMy grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry...
