Skydive2 1 #1 August 27, 2002 I'm getting ready to buy a new (or used if I can find one) velocity, and I'm getting alot of mixed info about wingloadings. I've jumped a 96 loaded at 1.9:8. I'm debating between a 90 and 84. I'd be loading the 90 @ 2.1:2 and the 84 @ 2.2:7. Most people are telling me that the ideal wingloading on velocity's is 2.1, but still others are saying that 2.2 is the way to go. Does anyone have opinions? I think I'm going to stick the the 90, but I don't want to spend $2200 and not be totally satisfied. Thanks in advance Lance
SkymonkeyONE 4 #2 August 27, 2002 Well, the question here is simply: "what do you want your canopy to do?" If you are looking for that maximum distance, keep it to the slightly lower wingload and then play with weights if you want a bit more speed in competition (if that is on your agenda). A person can certainly get away with a MUCH heavier wingload than you are talking about, but you reach a point of diminishing returns at a certain point if max distance is what you seek. Current competitive wingloads of people I know who jump Velocities run anywhere from 1.8 to no higher than 2.3. If I were skimping on cash and could only afford one main, I would choose around a 2.0 wingload, then pile on the weights for events which require quicker times, like PPPB speed. I like Velocities and have jumped them in several sizes, but have never owned one. I am pretty fascinated that PD has never created a 27, but as Shannon just flew out the back of a 400 foot course under a 21, I don't guess they need to be worrying about it really. weid14 0 #3 August 28, 2002 I've got two -- one at 1.83 and one at 2. or so. from what I've gathered flying them both and talking to a couple of the factory boys, the velcity really likes right around 2. I noticed the front riser pressure lower on teh higher loaded canopy and Heath told me to expect that when I got it. So Id stick to the 2.0 if I were in your shoes (cause I was and did
 eames 0 #4 August 28, 2002 I'd go with the bigger one and use weights if you have to, like Chuck said. I'm still kicking myself in the ass for buying a main on the smaller side, and leaving myself no room to play with wing loading. He would wear as much as 30 pounds of weight in PPPB speed rounds. Larger wing with lead will get you better results than a smaller wing at the same wingload in Distance rounds. I have jumped both in competition (most recently at the PSN)... as others have said it depends on what you want... the 2.1 gives great distance with reasonable speed, the 2.25 has great speed with reasonable distance... If you are on a budget get the lighter loading and then adjust it with weights if you want.
