Question about Straight in landings/wing loadings

Recommended Posts

I was wondering at what wing loading straight in landings become impractical/unsafe for someone with less that 50 jumps(me) I am not thinking of doing it. Just a thought that ran into head after seeing that guy 180 hook and hit the ground.

If you can hook turn a canopy and land it, you can fly it straight in and land it.
A downwind straight in landing will hurt a lot less than a low altitude emergency turn without enough altitude to complete the turn. It is a matter of horizontal vs. vertical speed. Sliding through the grass at 30 mph (horizontal speed) may give you a nice rasberry, but hitting the ground at 30 mph (vertical speed) will bust you up. You can reduce you vertical speed to zero even landing downwind, but if you turn too low.........

Great thread Viking, I was wondering the same thing today when somebody offered my 40 jump wonder buttocks a Xaos-21/108 to jump with the advice that "If you get established on final early, you shouldn't have a problem". Well, needless to say I declined because I'm a nutless wonder, but am still left wondering, what if? I would have been loading it at 1.71 out the door, and I've been jumping 1.29 regularly.

Spy, I don't know your experience, but I can say that I'm glad to hear that you declined that one. I'm a 100 jump wonder and loading something at 1.7 may not have killed me, but I wouldn't want to take that chance.
What if the spot was long and you had to land in a back yard, etc.

1st (like Hook said you can land almost anything straight in.. but...a spectre or..(yuk) a falcon at 2.0 might not be as good as an FX at 2 infact I never want to land a regular 7 cell more than 1.5)
At some DZ's (mine is not really an example) you can become freinds with someone, they can overestimate your abilities and offer to let you fly their jedei 135/velocity 105 whatever....as long as you turn on to final high and come straight in......
At 50 jumps I don't think you should make a radical departure. from what you fly.
at 150...if you are landing well...have all your d license accuracy landings and there is good weather..... try what you have the balls to try, ...but more than 2 sizes away from you current canopy and you are taking a significant risk...traffic/funny wind/unfamiliar gear/weird spot/and finally....a known killer...the BRAIN FART.
You signed the waivers..buddy..you saw the biff. I fyou try a canopy at 1.7 amd have never jumped one at 1.5...shame on ya.
My best instructor always told me..."don't downsize until you are tearing up your current main trying to get every last bit of performance".

Hey Spy,
good choice on not jumping the XAOS. Who ever offered it to you is not doing anything good. if I were you I would never again listen to ,take advice or accept anything from that person. Take you time with the canopy you jump now. You can always go smaller later, the hard part is getting back up in the air after you hurt yourself because you went too small too soon.
So again, good job on you decision.
