RSG 0 #1 October 22, 2002 Ok I would really like to change my canopy but I haven't tried something else ever, I have 200 jumps under my sleeve but all of them with A PD 190, I am 180lb How did you change to an elliptical canopy? And what should I go for folks? SABRE OR STILETO_________________________________________ R S G = Ready Set Goooooooooo
PhreeZone 20 #2 October 22, 2002 Learn to fly ZP before you got to elliptical. Get the Sabre 190 to play with for a few hundred jumps and if its not fast enough look into a Sabre 170 after learning all you can from the 190. If you want a demo call PD up and ask for them to send you a demo canopy. It will cost about $30 plus shipping (US) and you can jump it for 2 weeks to see if you like it.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

bobsoutar 0 #4 October 22, 2002 Try a Sabre 190 for a few jumps and either stick with it or drop to a Sabre 170 if you feel you can handle it. The Stiletto is eliptical and would be a big (and therefore not very sensible) jump from your PD 190. You could also try a lightly eliptical canopy like a Safire 179 after a few jumps on the Sabre 190 to see if you like it.
PhreeZone 20 #5 October 22, 2002 >will they send it overseas? Send Kolla an email and see. Her address is on PD's website. PD is usually really good in the customer support issues so they might help you out on this issue. PhreeZone 20 #6 October 22, 2002 A Safire 179 is a bad choice. Its actually more like a 165 sized PD canopy and is too small to jump right to from a PD 190. A Safire 199 would be a better choice. ChileRelleno 0 #7 October 22, 2002 RSG, I'll be blunt, In my opinion at 200 jumps you like myself have no business under a loaded elliptical. Semi elliptical? YES... Fully elliptical? NO...You first need to ask yourself, Can I land my current canopy uphill, downhill, crosswind, downwind, sink it into a tight area (accuracy), slow, fast and in all acceptable wind/weather conditions safely and consistently???? Before downsizing to another f111 or ZP main... ChileRelleno-Rodriguez Bro#414 Hellfish#511,MuffBro#3532,AnvilBro#9, D24868
bobsoutar 0 #8 October 22, 2002 Maybe, I know that PD size their Sabre about 5% smaller than they really are (a Sabre 150 is actually a 159 etc.) but the guy has got 200 jumps and could graduate after a few jumps on a Sabre 190 and 170 to a Safire 179 (or possibly a 189 would be better). drenaline 0 #9 October 23, 2002 If you want to try elliptical you can go to a cobalt, but email or call Dan to know what size of cobalt you should go for. Before I get flamed for recommending a cobalt (elliptical), Dan (cobaltdan) once told me that a cobalt was good for a newbie IF he loads it kinda light, thats why I said email or call Dan before buying. AggieDave 6 #10 October 23, 2002 Honestly, though, without the proper canopy control training, its like handing a high powered sports bike to someone and telling them they'll be safe aslong as they drive slow. Remember, you can lightly load just about any elliptical, there are only a couple on the market that can be honestly "underloaded", and get the desired effect of more doscile canopy, but why go through that, when the same person can buy a more doscile canopy to start with and learn more, more safely. What would you consider more safe for someone to learn canopy control on to step up to a higher performance canopy: a Sabre2 loaded @ 1.2 or a Colbalt loaded at 1.2? Definately the Sabre2. Why? Very similar flying characteristics will be found on an elliptical flown at a lighter wingloading as with a higher wingloading, the main difference being speed. Turn rates will be higher, dives faster, etc. I'm all about progressive canopy thought, but with the current state of teaching for canopy control for most (MOST) students, tackling a fully elliptical with less then 100 jumps will probably be scary.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
