AggieDave 6 #1 October 10, 2002 Anyone have a chart or know what the different slider sizes are on the different major canopies in the US, broken down by size?--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
councilman24 37 #2 October 10, 2002 I doubt it. This design detail while easily measured hasn't usually been shared out right. While you might find a general relationship you would find differences particular to each canopy design. Often times problems with particular canopies or complaints by particular customer are "fixed" by changing the slider. So any individual canopy of a particular model may or may not have the standard slider. And the manufacturer may have altered the slider during the design life of the canopy. If you have a particular problem with a particular canopy I'd deal with that manufacturer. If you start measuring, let us know. I'm old for my age. Samurai136 0 #3 October 10, 2002 Indeed. I haven't checked other brands but the slider size on the Samurai is scaled to the size of the main. i.e. the slider on a 120 Samurai is 1/2 the width of the binding tape smaller than the 136 Samurai, etc etc. I was packing a friend's old 150 Saber and noticed that the slider was definately smaller than my 136 Samurai and possibly smaller than the 120 Samurai. Which would explain why the Saber slammed him frequently and the Samurai did not. Ken"Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken
riggerrob 643 #4 October 10, 2002 Newer Sabres (Mk 1) have larger sliders than the first Sabres that they built. I have not heard of any formula, but George Galloway said "with a larger slider, the canopy starts to inflate earlier, but takes longer to inflate." Slider size is just one variable in a long list of what affects openings. If you ask for slider size on a specific model (i.e. Stiletto 135) I should be able to measure what is laying around my shop and post the size.
cobaltdan 0 #5 October 10, 2002 most people believe bigger slider = slower opening. this is not necessarily true. there are >many< variables that come into play. i.e. reducing the span of a slider in many instances will slow the opening, even though the slider is now smaller in area. i.e. cobalt canopy sizes 65 through 150 use the exact same slider dimensions ! confused yet? dont expect to find a formula for slider size to canopy size. there are simply too many design variables that effect reefing and opening. and as was pointed out a chart of canopy models to slider size is impractical as many manufacturers change slider sizes as quick fixes for brisk or hard opening canopies. best suggestion is when in doubt contact the manufacturer. they should be able to look up a file on the specific canopy via serial number and give you the information. sincerely, dan<><> atair aerodynamics www.extremefly.comDaniel Preston <><> atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)
