Open Container at Rantoul

Recommended Posts

We were on a Casa behind a 16-way and a 6-way. The red light came on and the first two groups stood up. As the 16-way was taking grips with the green light, a freeflyer at the front of the plane started yelling "Open container, open container!" A woman diver on the sixteen way had walked up and taken her grips with her bag dragging on the floor of the plane. No one in the 6-way or our 4-way had seen the bag fall out or being dragged. Several of the 6-way people grabbed her and pulled her off the formation, another guy grabbed the bag, and she was sat down and seatbelted in.

Remember to look out for your other divers at all times! The jump starts when you suit up and doesn't end till you are back on the ground.

It was a heads up call by the freeflyer!

Blue skies,

Jim

Simular to an incident at Æra/Norway this weekend. During a 16-way, a persons container opened. The cameraman that where filming from above noticed and got the ---- out of the way and most of the others noticed and splitt. The bag didn't come out of the container, but it was a close call. He stayed untill all the others had splitt, threw out the PC and had a normal deployment The rest of the weekend nobody were sloppy and skipped pin checks. I weren't on the jump, so I don't got all the details. Only saw the video afterwards...

There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Also at Rantoul on the Pitts after the plane rolled over and the jumper was hanging on the bar the dbag fell out and was captured on film bouncing around until the jumper let go. The pin was knocked out as the jumper stood up. The container was one with a tongue style that snagged as he stood up on the lip of the seat. The pin was assumed to have been knocked out at the same time. Accourding to the Pitts crew member I spoke to the pilot realized what was happening and called for the cut early and both the jumper and the plane landed safely.

After this all containers were inspected for pin placement before exiting.
Yesterday is history
And tomorrow is a mystery

In my Bi-plane photos I was shocked to see that MY main flap was open when I stood up in the seat. I own a newer Mirage G-3 and have always had the main flap still tucked in when landing. My flaps were checked before boarding by the crew and I felt them myself. The cockpit is cramped with a rig on, couple that with aerobatics and trying to stand up carefully at exit time in a crapmed space and not touch/grab the plane in unappropriate places in a timely manner leaves alot happening at once.

funny, i thought we were only a 10way :)

many thanks to the guy who caught it.... the woman invoved is usually anal about gear checks, however the plane was particularly crowded, and you kjnow.. rush rush rush....

good save.

Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time

I wouldn't worry about the @#&* coming out if you're holding the d-bag in your lap as the plane is going down. You can always cut away if something bad happens (like it gets sucked out the door and starts inflating).

I would wanna bear-hug that dbag like a muffu&&@a!

Had similar incident at the UK Nationals. 4way exit, inside centre half out the v tight SMG door, and his pin gets popped. Tail noticed and backed off as the formation launched; the camera man came straight down to the guy and gave him the AFF "pull" signal. Luckily he had done AFF and dumped out and had a nice safe 10000ft canopy ride. I was impressed with camera man, and the guy himself for getting what had happened so quickly... and yep, they got the re-jump ;-)

Yea, but if the parachute does go out the door "you on it or not", there is a GOOD chance it will wrap around the tail and take the plane down!!!
