Can I have a ripped slider fixed?

Recommended Posts

I have a demo which they are letting me have for an extended period. I have approximately 30 jumps on it and when I went to pack it today, I discovered the slider had a tear (aprox. 2.5 inches long, near one of the collapsing line channels, but not on or through it) in it. No idea how. Had a neck breaker on no. 2 last week, but I think I would have noticed the tear while packing for no. 3 or no. 4.

Anyway, if I take it to a rigger, can he fix/patch the slider? Do I have to get a new slider? Since it's a demo, I gotta believe, cheaper is better, if it's a legit fix.;)

get an opinion from an experienced rigger, and he/she should have the manufacturer's specs/information about how to facilitate the repair. to me (and i'm no rigger) i believe a rigger can fix it for you, if it's not a major rip, or gash. but if it's just a tear as you say, it shouldn't be a problem. but in any event, seek advice from a ticketed rigger, my advice is strictly on a "novice" level, and from my experience(s)

good luck, do get that fixed, or you will get "slammed" again, maybe even harder.

If it's a demo, don't touch it. Contact the manufacturer, tell them what happened and see what they want to have done with it.

Remember, it's their canopy.

Agreed with Kris here, and if they ask for you to have your rigger fix it. Have your rigger draft a bill of work for you so that if you decide to possibly buy the demo you can talk the factory out of that much labor cost.

If it was your slider, I would say ask your local senior rigger to sew on a patch. If the hole is in the middle of a panel, it should be a simple repair.
However, since it is a demo canopy, you should call the manufacturer. They prefer to repair demo gear in house and usually do it for free.

Oops. Went to the DZ and talked to a PD test jumper and told him my plan to get it fixed, and he didn't jump up and down, so I went forward with it. It cost $30 including a $10 rush fee. The rigger sewed a patch, same color over it. Actually removed the channel the slider stow line goes through, sewed the patch, and resewed the channel.

I can't believe they would be too mad, since they have had my parachute for approximately six weeks and the most recent report was, "We can't figure out why it is doing what it is doing." I may end up getting this thing relined before they figure it out. Mahalo for everyone's input.
