Tinting a helmet lens

Recommended Posts

Without getting into the argument about whether helmet lenses should be tinted at all...

RIT fabric dye does an excellent job of tinting the lenses of both Z1 and OXYGN (and presumably other SkySystems) helmets. For mixing the dye just follow the instructions as if dying fabric. Make sure the dye is completely dissolved before putting the lens in or it will streak.

Clean the lens before dipping it in the dye to remove any grease spots that will lead to uneven tinting. Dip the lens in the dye and agitate for a few seconds, then remove and rinse it. Repeat until the tint is dark enough. The plastic takes up the dye very quickly so don't leave it in too long.

If you want a gradient tint (darker at the top), then dip it in so that the top of the lens gets more time in the dye.

There are dozens of dye colors to choose from, and you can buy it at most supermarkets and fabric stores. I've used both grey and brown, which give tints that don't distort color perception.

Cool idea, but does the lens fog up after it's dyed?

No - the anti fog coating is not affected so long as you don't rub it. After rinsing just let the lens air dry.
...

The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
