IMGR2 0 #51 June 20, 2002 I have deployed head down with a Cobalt 95, intentionally.Logging somewhere in the vicinity of 165 mph on video. It did hurt but I firmly believe that if it where any canopy other than a Cobalt, I would either be dead or quadreplegic right now.My suggestion to everyone else is; its nice to know that it can be deployed headdown but don't do it on purpose. It still hurts and there are always no guarantees. My .02Bryan S. Moffett
PhreeZone 20 #52 June 20, 2002 I've deployed my Cobalt in a sit a few times for video and it's not even as bad as a Sabre opening. My deployment speeds have been around 140-150 on the high speed openings. It wakes you up thats for sure... but would I try it with any other canopy? Nope....Drop the tube...DROP the tube... eames 0 #53 June 20, 2002 The openings on my Xaos-21 have been much better than on the demo Cobalt I tried. The Cobalt spanked me on about every third opening and was much worse on high deployments. I've deployed the Xaos at terminal above 12,000 ft many times and it has always opened very softly, unlike the Cobalt or the Velocity. I'd be more comfortable under a Xaos deploying at high speeds. No, I didn't touch the risers during opening. Yes, I followed all of Atair's packing directions.Jason

Spy38W 0 #55 June 20, 2002 QuoteThe Cobalt spanked me on about every third opening I heard that there was one Cobalt demo that was dunked in a pond a few times that had funky openings, IIRC. I've been playing with a 150 the past few weeks and have had amazing openings. Dumped in a sit once and didn't have any problems. Maybe you got the funky one?--Come to the dark side
eames 0 #56 June 20, 2002 QuoteMaybe you got the funky one?Quite possibly. Although two of my friends that demo'd two other different Cobalts of two different sizes also had the problem. I'd like to demo a Competition Cobalt and see how it compares to my Xaos' and the Velocity I've been jumping. But to tell you the truth, I probably won't.Jason
IMGR2 0 #57 June 20, 2002 This is an interesting subject. I was at Skydive Houston a couple of months ago and Eric Butts was there with a few demos. Knowing that I have been jumping cobalts for quite awhile, he asked me to jump a 105 he had. Apparently there were a couple of people that said this specific cobalt 105 had a problem. It had very brisk openings. I was not told this until after I had jumped it about 5 times. In those five jumps it never smacked me once. I actually videoed a couple of the openings, perfect two stages. This is an enigma to me. Apparently I either pack or deploy different than others.Sorry no answer for this one.BryanGR#
f1freak 0 #58 June 21, 2002 Dan,A little off topic, but what canopys are being flown on the video in the press section of your website? are some of them comp cobalts?ThanksIf you’re into playin it close that’s cool, but we're talkin major malfunction here T Sparks
KellyF 16 #59 June 21, 2002 Guys, please don't "test" how well your parachute opens by deploying in a sit, or head down! Your asking for major problems! It would be quite easy to rip your reserve container off your rig, break your collar bone, or worst of all, get ejected from your rig!If you want to do high speed deployments (which I don't recommend), just go head down for a while, get face to earth, and deploy before you slow down. This will distribute the opening shock through the harness the way it was designed to.
Jimbo 0 #60 June 21, 2002 So are you saying that the warranty is void if I do this in my Infinity? J/K.-Jim

Have you conducted similar _experiments_ on other canopies? What lead you to believe you could do this on the Cobalt in the first place?alan
VectorBoy 0 #64 June 22, 2002 All right break it up, break it up Dan. Enough playing with funky loadings ( most impressive BTW ) and send me MY 135. Its been eight weeks now. I'm starting to get attached to square1's demo 120 and thats getting expensive. Glen.
