What are they doing to my Vengeance?

Recommended Posts

I own a 135 Vengeance that frequently did a left descending turn on opening. After it was fully opened and stopped turning, it flew great; straight with the brakes on or off, nice descent, nice landing characteristics. I called PD to ask if they had any suggestions. They asked about 10 questions and said send it back. I understand this has happened to others so my question is;
1) Has anyone else sent their Vengeance back?
2) What did they do to it?
3) How did it respond after it came back?
4) How long did it take?
Thanks in advance. :)flyhiB|

I know of one person who had a problem with the openings on a Vengeance. He sent it back to PD and ended up getting a brand new one, which he says opens great. I don't know what the problem with the first one was, but PD took good care of him!

My 135 has vectran lines (Don't know if line trim has anything to do with it.
I'm loaded at 1.7.
Mine does dive on opening, but it is random left or right and explainable. It snivels on heading...just one side some times opens a little faster (airlocks you know). I have never had line twists except for a tube jump (silly rabbit big tubes and loaded vengeances don't get along)
I jumped mine this weekend instead of my FX just for giggles.
I still love that canopy except I have to hook it when I am really scared (350 ish) because I am used to my fX
I hope they fix it, they are great canopies

I also this problem sometime ,but talking to john I understood that they might want to stich some more tape on the nose or replace some fabric . so for the time being I dump and go for the rear riser just in case ,and it seems to me that it opens latelly a littel beter so maybe it was body position or packing problems

Couldn't stand the suspense and called PD today. They said they had three or four canopies there that they intended to reline and they wanted to test jump. Hopefully I'll get it back by Friday, but who knows.

This is second-hand information, so take it with a grain of salt...
I know somebody who had a "problem" Vengeance. When they sent it in, PD apparently test jumped a bit, scared the shit out of their test jumpers, pulled the WHOLE THING apart, re-maid it, jumped it some more, and then built a new one and sent it back.
It seems like the Vengeance design may be tolerance-sensitive (on opening, anyway). At least it flies nice, once open. I would be happy flying one.

I jump a Samurai and my friend at the DZ had a similar problem w/ his 170 Vengeance; off-heading openings. He sent it back and told them he was thinking about getting a Samurai since everyone else at the DZ w/ a Samurai thought the Vengeance was a dogsled. PD sent him a new 150 Vengeance and the problem is fixed.

After a bit of research we got some answers into the difference between the two canopies. The Veng has longer suspension lines thus making the canopy feel slower and it's trimmed to fly flatter than the Samurai. PD compensated for the slower 'feel' by making some shaping to the wing to initiate quicker turns. Perhaps the shaping initiates off-heading openings?

I've found that any combination of poor body position, tension and moving during deployment (before the slider is all the way down) will make the canopy take off; since you are essentially giving it a harness turn during the inflation process.

Although, I think he may still wish he'd gotten a Samurai, my friend seems very satisfied w/ his Vengeance now. No issues w/ the openings. What they 'fixed' is a mystery of the cosmos.

Mahalo all for the interest. Got a call today from PD and they were calling, "No Mas" on this canopy. They are giving me a new one of my choice. ;)
Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.
