Zennie 0 #1 April 7, 2002 Had a real eye-opener when going over some head down video this past weekend. We're watching the jump and one guy goes "hey man, look at your shoulder harness"... it was off my shoulder and about 6 inches down my arm.I generally tighten my chest strap fairly snug. But I notice that when I sit down the strap "loosens". When I put it on another person observed that it seemed to sit a little low on me.I'm about 5'8" and bought the rig from a person who was about 5'10". The shoulders always fit a little on the loose side but I never felt anything and never thought much of it... until I saw that video. I went back to look at previous jumps and every now and then the shoulder harness would slip off a little. So for those of you that have bought a used rig designed for someone a bit taller than you... make sure you have your rigger check the fit and make any necessary adjustments. I'm taking mine to my rigger this week to shorten the leg harnesses. Falling out of your rig would be a bad thing!"Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense." rgoper 0 #2 April 7, 2002 Zenmeister:wouldn't you want to send that back to the manufacturer? or is it over a year old, if not they will pay for shipping, etc, just a thought.Richard

airann 1 #4 April 7, 2002 I have seen a hundred vidios of this happening ... This one dude Chris from Gladewater reguarly has his shoulder harness hangin off... like in every video....Its not an emergency at all... tighten your chest strap and move on.Anything that totally freaks you out is not good, but its not all that....Stevie is another one, Ramon.... Levin.... they have all had a shoulder off at one time.... it happens... The longer you stay around freeflying the longer you will know what all can happen to a rig at certain mph's. Flap coming open is another common one. Ann ~ www.AirAnn.comLevin in RW suit.. I have pictures!!!
rgoper 0 #5 April 7, 2002 wouldn't matter, if it's less than a year old. e-mail the manufacturer and ask for details, they will tell you what they will/won't do. in most cases like with sunpath, they'll do it, they send you a ups sticker, they get it fix it, ship it back.Richard

airann 1 #10 April 7, 2002 old or new... I have seen it happen tons and tons of times even on a base jump I saw it (video) so, it is just a little extra thing you should have known about before freeflying. And more importantly check your shyt, k but the people jumping with you, you dont want a premature deployment in your face. Always look around at everyones stuff.Rigs can be old as hell and not have a harness come down or they can be brand new and same thing. Its not so much the fit but your adjusments as to what you are going to to.Example- Freeflyer has chest strap honckerd down. Before openig he loosens it ~ so he wont get his head pinched off - nor will his risers hit his camera - - - get it.Ann ~ www.AirAnn.comLevin in RW suit.. I have pictures!!! Zennie 0 #11 April 7, 2002 Quoteall it would costs is an e-mailTrue. Actually it may not cost even that since it's a Vector 3 & Bill Booth has been a lot more active around here lately. Quite honestly, I'd be reluctant to send it back because I'd be rigless for a while. I'd rather have my own rigger do it during the week.It may be a simple matter of being more disciplined about chest strap tightness. But I've been kind of wanting it modified to me for some time now and this seems like a good reason too. I'll ask though. Thanks! rgoper 0 #12 April 7, 2002 Zennie:they turn them around in a week, you'll be rigless 7 days tops, if you plan it right. but i'm sure mr. booth can handle it, i just didn't want to see you get your warranty voided.Richard
Kirils 1 #13 April 8, 2002 I had an old Javalin (purchased well used) that was giving the same problem. I took a piece of 1" elastic with snaps installed at the ends to hold the sholder straps in on my shoulders. Free flyers do the same thing with leg straps...Skydiving is not a static excercise with discrete predictability...
Zennie 0 #14 April 8, 2002 QuoteFlap coming open is another common one.I wouldn't say that it's "no big deal". Max seemed concerned enough about it. Again, itmaybe a simple matter of tightening the chest strap more, but I'm gonna talk with Bill Lee to make sure. The one testimonial in all that was that even though the harness slipped, the flaps were still rock solid. Gotta love Vector 3s. "Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense."

AndyMan 7 #17 April 8, 2002 There are no warantees in skydiving. The manufacturers will not be held liable for anything. The will usually fix things, but it's not a warantee. Having mods done to your gear will not change this, unless you're asking them to fix something that you had changed.Aerodyne gave me free fixes to my old Triathlon even when I bought it second hand. Plus, they gave me a Diablo to play with in the process. Zennie 0 #18 April 8, 2002 Quoteyou didn't get a warranty? Please people. Read my original post carefully. I said I bought the rig off of someone who was 5'10". That makes it pretty clear that it was bought used. A lot of this discussion seems to have labored under the mistaken assumption that I bought it new.My whole purpose of posting this was because people buy a lot of used gear. 90% of the time, particularly with rigs, the rig will be spec'd to the original owner. That means you might need to have some adjustments made by your rigger in order to make it fit right for you."Zero Tolerance: the politically correct term for zero thought, zero common sense." billbooth 10 #19 April 8, 2002 Zennie; If your rig doesn't have hip rings, we, or any master rigger, could shorten your main lift web in a couple of hours, for not too many bucks. If it does have hip rings, it needs a whole new harness, which takes a while and costs a lot. Of course, if you had bought it from us, we would do the work for free. We do offer a satisfaction guaranteed warranty. As suggested above, simply tightening the chest strap does effectively shorten the main lift webs. If your chest strap doesn't keep hitting you on the chin on opening, you're home free. Shortening your leg pads can also help. If you jumped in Deland, you'd have 6 or 7 master riggers fighting over the job.
rgoper 0 #20 April 8, 2002 i certainly wasn't inferring that the manufacturer would accept any liabilities, i was simply stating "some" manufacturers will void any warranty of repair/upgrade if you have had someone else alter it other than themselfs. my J-4 still needs to be shipped back to get the new type leg strap buckles, the stainless slip like a big dog. i'm gonna wait, and just have B-12's put on it. that's all i was trying to say........Richard
skymama 37 #21 April 8, 2002 Hey Zennie-I'm just wondering...do you have any bruising on your biceps? That happened to me on my first rig when it was too big for me.Andi"Yes it's windy. There are ripples on the pond." weid14
Zennie 0 #22 April 8, 2002 Quotedo you have any bruising on your biceps? As a matter of fact, I do. Also right above my armpit.I'm one of the few lucky souls to have a great Master Rigger (Bill Lee) within 10 minutes of my house. lummy 4 #23 April 8, 2002 Along these lines...Can the leg straps be lengthened? I just bought a used Vector 3 and the fit is pretty good except for that I can no longer putthe rig on my shoulders THEN bend my legs back to put them thru. On the other hand, it is nice not having the extra foot or so of strap to deal with (which liked to come loose in freefall on the rental gear)If not, any recommendations to putting the gear on and keeping handles safe besides the obvious?baby's hungry and the money's all gone. the folks back home don't want to talk on the phone.
